Temporal Temperature Distribution in Shallow Sediments of a Large Shallow Lake and Estimated Hyporheic Flux Using VFLUX 2 Model

Yong Li et al.

Summary: This study assessed temporal water exchange patterns using observed temperature distributions in shallow sediments of Lake Taihu in eastern China. Results showed differences in temperature amplitudes across sampling sites and depths, reflecting seasonal water interaction near the sediment surface. The study highlighted the importance of understanding exchange flux at the sediment-water interface for comprehensive lake management.

Nitrate Removal by a Novel Lithoautotrophic Nitrate-Reducing, Iron(II)-Oxidizing Culture Enriched from a Pyrite-Rich Limestone Aquifer

Natalia Jakus et al.

Summary: Nitrate removal in olitrotrophic environments is limited by the availability of organic electron donors. Chemolithoautotrophic bacteria may play a key role in denitrification in aquifers depleted in organic carbon. An enriched lithoautotrophic culture of nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidation microorganisms was successfully obtained from nitrate-containing groundwater.

Activity of Autotrophic Fe(II)-Oxidizing Denitrifiers in Freshwater Lake Sediments

Yunmeng Pang et al.

Summary: This study found that the addition of extra Fe(II) in organic carbon-limited sediments could enhance the contribution of biological Fe(II)-oxidizing denitrification to at least 26% of total denitrification. Through C-13 labeling experiments and high-throughput sequencing analysis, the research revealed that Paracoccus and Thiobacillus may play key roles as autotrophic Fe(II)-oxidizing denitrifiers in freshwater lake sediments.
