Spatial responses of long-eared bats Plecotus auritus to forestry practices: Implications for forest management in protected areas

L. Ancillotto et al.

Summary: The study on brown long-eared bats in a beech-dominated forest landscape in central Italy revealed their preference for high forest stands and the impact of landscape features on their commuting and foraging behavior. Overall, the results suggest the importance of high forest in conservation efforts and the long-lasting effects of previous forest management on forest-specialist taxa.

Rare and common species contribute disproportionately to the functional variation within tropical forests

Shuzi Zhang et al.

Summary: The distribution of functional traits and entities within plant communities can help understand vegetation properties and changes. Research on woody plants in old-growth forests in Hainan Island showed that common and rare species contribute differently to ecosystem functions, with rare species potentially playing a disproportionately large role. Loss of rare species may impact the functioning, redundancy, and resilience of tropical forests.

Ecological Restoration of a Loess Open-Cast Mining Area in China: Perspective from an Ecological Security Pattern

Kai Yang et al.

Summary: Open-cast coal mining in China has advantages over underground mining, but it can have negative ecological effects. Constructing an ecological security pattern (ESP) can protect regional ecological sustainability. This study identifies ecological sources and constructs corridors to form a valid ecological network in the Pingshuo open-cast mining area. The results show that the ESP in the study area includes 11 sources and 17 corridors.

Characterizing composition profile and diversity patterns of spontaneous urban plants across China's major cities

Siwei Hu et al.

Summary: Spontaneous urban plants (SUPs) are an important component of urban vegetation, but they have been understudied in urban biodiversity and ecological research, especially at the regional scale. This study comprehensively reviewed the occurrence records of SUPs in 59 major cities across China and analyzed their floristic composition and diversity patterns.

Summary: The extent of ecosystems has been significantly impacted by human activities, leading to a demand for ecological restoration. In this study, the distribution and condition of habitat-forming species were surveyed to prioritize restoration sites and create optimized planting regimes. The integration of species distribution models allows for dynamic restoration targets across landscapes.

Constructing and optimizing urban ecological network in the context of rapid urbanization for improving landscape connectivity

Xinxin Huang et al.

Summary: This study applied landscape pattern indexes and the MCR model to construct an urban ecological network, finding that many ecological land types are distributed in the tributaries of the Yangtze River, but the number of ecological corridors is decreasing in 2015. Through an ecological network optimization plan, the connectivity of urban ecological functioning stability can be promoted.

Expanding or shrinking? range shifts in wild ungulates under climate change in Pamir-Karakoram mountains, Pakistan

Hussain Ali et al.

Summary: This study investigated the populations of Himalayan ibex and blue sheep in the Pamir-Karakoram mountains to understand their distribution shifts under climate change scenarios and predict future habitats. Results indicated that both species currently have suitable habitats in about 37% and 9% of the study area, but they are projected to lose significant parts of their habitats under changing climate scenarios. The Pamir-Karakoram ranges are expected to serve as climate refugia for both species, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts in this region for Pakistan's mountain ungulates.

Impacts of future climate change and different management scenarios on water-related ecosystem services: A case study in the Jianghuai ecological economic Zone, China

Min Guo et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of future climate change and land management scenarios on water-related ecosystem services in the Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone by 2030. It was found that climate change had a greater impact on water yield than LULC, but LULC change had a greater impact on water purification.

Urban growth drives trait composition of urban spontaneous plant communities in a mountainous city in China

Linyu Hu et al.

Summary: Urban ecosystems are impacted by environmental stressors and human activities, which play a role in filtering species with different life-history traits. The study found that seed size and leaf element composition are key factors in functional differentiation among urban plant species. Furthermore, the intensity of urban growth is correlated with certain leaf traits, indicating a nutrient-use strategy and competitive advantage for species in urban centers.

Just weeds? Comparing assessed and perceived biodiversity of urban spontaneous vegetation in informal greenspaces in the context of two American legacy cities

Daniel Phillips et al.

Summary: Legacy cities are seen as drivers of informal landscape patterns, where urban spontaneous vegetation contributes to biodiversity in informal urban greenspaces. People prefer greenspaces with moderate biodiversity levels, and perceived biodiversity does not correlate significantly with measured biodiversity. Unmaintained landscapes in legacy cities elicit negative sentiment among the public.

Summary: The study developed an urban spontaneous vegetation (USV) identification algorithm based on NDVI from Sentinel-2 data and verified it in Warsaw's green spaces, demonstrating the widespread presence and persistence of USV in urban greenery. Results indicated that approximately 54% of Warsaw's greenery is cultivated vegetation, while the rest shows varying levels of spontaneity.

Drivers of spontaneous plant richness patterns in urban green space within a biodiversity hotspot

Zhiwen Gao et al.

Summary: The study surveyed spontaneous plant species in urban green patches in Kunming, China, identifying a significant presence of herbaceous plants and invasive species. Regression models showed that the richness of spontaneous species in urban green patches was influenced by factors such as patch area, distance to city boundary, and landscape shape index. While the drivers of spontaneous plants were similar across different species groups, the relative importance of each driver varied among them. This research provides valuable insights for optimizing biodiversity conservation in urban green spaces within rapidly urbanizing biodiversity hotspot regions.

Working With Wilderness: A Promising Direction for Urban Green Spaces

Ingo Kowarik

Summary: Wilderness is a cultural concept deeply rooted in many societies, and it has been historically important in landscape design. Urban wilderness can be classified into ancient and novel categories, each requiring different approaches in green space design and management. While ancient wilderness is traditionally conserved and restored, novel wilderness has emerged in urban-industrial areas and is now being integrated into green infrastructure with successful results.
