Root microbiome changes associated with cadmium exposure and/or overexpression of a transgene that reduces Cd content in rice

Kangjia Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of overexpressing a truncated OsO3L2 gene on root-associated microbes in a low cadmium-accumulating rice line. Amplicon sequencing revealed less microbial diversity in the rhizoplane compared to the rhizosphere. The presence of the transgene and cadmium treatment led to changes in certain microbial taxa, with potential implications for reducing cadmium uptake in crops.

A review on bioremediation approach for heavy metal detoxification and accumulation in plants

P. R. Yaashikaa et al.

Summary: The accumulation of toxic heavy metals in soil and water is a serious environmental problem, causing harmful effects on plants and animals. Phytoremediation is an effective method to detoxify and accumulate heavy metals in contaminated ecosystems. This review discusses the toxicity effects of heavy metals on the environment and mechanisms of phytoremediation, as well as the areas for improvement in the current process.

Source analysis and source-oriented risk assessment of heavy metal pollution in agricultural soils of different cultivated land qualities

Xufeng Fei et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the interaction between soil quality and heavy metal pollution. The results show that with increasing soil quality, heavy metal contamination and ecological and health risks increase significantly. Industrial activities, agricultural activities, and coal combustion are the major pollution sources. Policies should be formulated to control industrial pollution and improve the ecological environment.

Effects of the increases in soil pH and pH buffering capacity induced by crop residue biochars on available Cd contents in acidic paddy soils

Hai-long Lu et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects of crop residue biochar addition on soil pH and pH buffering capacity (pHBC), and found that biochar significantly increased soil pH and pHBC, while reducing the content of available Cd in the soil.

Increasing the hydrophyte removal rate of dissolved inorganic phosphorus using a novel Fe-Mg-loaded activated carbon hydroponic substrate with adsorption-release dual functions

Puliang Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a hydroponic substrate prepared from granular activated carbon loaded with nanoiron-magnesium hydroxide (AC-Fe-Mg) was developed to address the low phosphorus removal efficiency in plant floating beds. The AC-Fe-Mg exhibited superior adsorption and release ability for phosphorus and when combined with I. pseudacorus L., achieved a high phosphorus removal rate. The AC-Fe-Mg provided continuous and stable phosphorus to the plants, effectively controlling and removing dissolved inorganic phosphorus.

Effects of remediation agents on microbial community structure and function in soil aggregates contaminated with heavy metals

Jiuwei Song et al.

Summary: This study investigated the remediation effects of heavy metal remediation agents on heavy metals in contaminated soils and their effects on the structure and function of microbial communities in soil aggregates. The agents decreased the concentrations of available heavy metals mainly by increasing soil pH. Changes in bacterial community structure were related to heavy metal contents, and the addition of remediation agents altered microbial composition.

Interactions of pristine and aged nanoplastics with heavy metals: Enhanced adsorption and transport in saturated porous media

Xianglong Xi et al.

Summary: The interaction of aged nanoplastics with heavy metals was investigated in this study. The results showed that aged nanopolystyrene had an enhanced adsorption capacity for heavy metals due to the increase in oxygen containing functional groups. The aged nanoplastics also promoted the transport of heavy metals more effectively than pristine nanoplastics. This study is significant in assessing the potential risk of aged nanoplastics in soil-groundwater systems.

Study the impact of ultra-sonication and pulsed electric field on the quality of wheat plantlet juice through FTIR and SERS

Zahoor Ahmed et al.

Summary: The combined use of pulsed electric field and ultrasound had a significant impact on the quality of wheat plantlet juice, increasing total phenolics, total flavonoids, chlorophyll, and antioxidant activities while decreasing enzyme activities and microbial populations. The analysis using Fourier Transform Infrared and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy showed enhanced nutritional molecules in the juice treated with the combined method. These findings suggest the suitability of integrated methods for further research and applications in food processing.
