Reactive extrusion of highly filled, compatibilized, and sustainable PHBV/PBAT-Hemp residue biocomposite

Arvind Gupta et al.

Summary: Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a biodegradable thermoplastic with promising mechanical properties. Its high cost and brittleness have limited its extensive applications. This study used hemp powder residue (HP) and polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) as additives to optimize the properties and cost of PHBV. The developed biocomposite demonstrated similar performance to conventional plastics, making it suitable for rigid packaging and container applications.

Bioplastics for a circular economy

Jan-Georg Rosenboom et al.

Summary: Bioplastics have the potential to contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy by reducing carbon footprint and offering advantageous material properties. However, they also face challenges such as negative agricultural impacts, competition with food production, unclear end-of-life management, and higher costs. Emerging chemical and biological methods can enable the upcycling of plastic waste into higher-quality materials. Standardization and guidelines are needed to guide purchasing choices, and clear regulations and financial incentives are essential for the large-scale adoption of bioplastics in a truly sustainable manner.

Effect of hybridization composition and glycerin content on novel corn starch/nata de coco plastic film: Thermal, mechanical, and degradation study

Siti Noor Hidayah Mustapha et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to develop a plastic film from food sources with excellent thermal, mechanical, and degradability performance. The hybridization of corn starch and nata de coco improved the film properties, and the addition of glycerin as a plasticizer did not significantly affect these properties.

Leads and hurdles to sustainable microbial bioplastic production

Sherin Varghese et al.

Summary: The indiscriminate usage, disposal, and resistance of petroleum-based plastics have led to their accumulation and negative impact on the environment. Microbial bioplastics, as an ecologically sustainable solution, can neutralize the negative effects of plastics. Scientific evidence suggests a wide range of applications for bioplastics in industries, agriculture, and medicine. However, industrial production of bioplastics still poses challenges. This paper provides insights into maximizing bioplastic production using various approaches and outlines the constraints and future directions in microbial bioplastic production.

Cost competitiveness of sustainable bioplastic feedstocks - A Monte Carlo analysis for polylactic acid

Claudia Wellenreuther et al.

Summary: Producing plastics from biological resources is a promising option for reducing carbon emissions and addressing plastic waste. However, using food plants as feedstocks raises sustainability concerns related to agricultural land use. This paper conducts a comparative metaanalysis of the costs of producing a bio-based plastic polymer, Polylactic Acid (PLA), from two alternative feedstocks: corn grain and corn stover. The study emphasizes the importance of reducing fixed costs through upscaling and learning effects.

Waste to bioplastics: How close are we to sustainable polyhydroxyalkanoates production?

Kasra Khatami et al.

Summary: Increased awareness of environmental sustainability and strict environmental regulations have encouraged the search for novel materials to replace conventional petroleum-derived plastics. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are attractive due to their biodegradability and biocompatibility, but challenges remain in production yield and consistency. Bioaugmentation and metabolic engineering are promising approaches to overcome these hurdles in commercial PHA production from waste streams.

Bio-based conversion of volatile fatty acids from waste streams to polyhydroxyalkanoates using mixed microbial cultures

Mariel Perez-Zabaleta et al.

Summary: This study proposed a potential process to reduce the production cost of polyhydroxyalkanoates by utilizing mixed cultures to accumulate the biopolymer using volatile fatty acid-rich effluents from waste streams, without the need for pH and temperature control. The microbial community successfully adapted to different substrates, consuming the volatile fatty acids completely. The highest polyhydroxyalkanoate content reached 43.5% w/w, with a biopolymer composition mainly consisting of (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate and (R)-3-hydroxyvalerate.

Valorizing waste liquor from dilute acid pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass by Bacillus megaterium B-10

Jiawei Li et al.

Summary: An efficient biostrategy was developed to upgrade waste sugar in Dilute Acid Pretreatment Liquor (DAPL) of lignocellulose, using Bacillus megaterium B-10 to convert the waste sugar into high-valuable polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). The concentration of sugar and phenolics in DAPL can reach certain levels after pretreating rice straw, and a demonstrated yield of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) was achieved through this bioconversion.
