Alkaline modification on schwertmannite promoted the simultaneous immobilization of arsenite and cadmium

Xiaomeng Wang et al.

Summary: An alkaline modification method was proposed to improve the treatment efficiency of schwertmannite for As(III)-Cd(II) co-contamination in acidic soil. The alkali-modified Schwertmannite (Sch-OH) showed increased adsorption capacity for Cd(II) and decreased adsorption capacity for As(III). In contaminated soil, Sch-OH demonstrated the ability to decrease the extractable As content and immobilize Cd.

Stabilization of arsenic and antimony Co-contaminated soil with an iron-based stabilizer: Assessment of strength, leaching and hydraulic properties and immobilization mechanisms

Shiji Zhou et al.

Summary: Soils with high concentrations of arsenic and antimony in mining areas pose significant risks to human health and ecosystems. A new stabilizer called PFSC, composed of polymerized ferric sulfate (PFS) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), was proposed to stabilize soils contaminated with co-existing arsenic and antimony. The study showed that increasing the dosage of PFSC effectively reduced the leached concentrations of arsenic and antimony. The stabilizer also improved the compressive strength and reduced the hydraulic conductivity of the soil. The mechanisms of immobilization involved adsorption on ferrihydrite, entrapment in hematite lattices, and co-precipitation with calcite.

Wenshun Ke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution and geochemical partitioning of heavy metals (HMs) in soil samples from an abandoned lead smelting site. The results showed that As, Pb and Cd posed serious threats to soil quality with high spatial heterogeneity. The study also identified the major mineral hosts for HMs and found that quartz, montmorillonite, and goethite were closely associated with HMs minerals in contaminated soils, limiting their vertical migration and potential risks to groundwater.

Adsorption of pollutants in wastewater via biosorbents, nanoparticles and magnetic biosorbents: A review

Guat Teng Tee et al.

Summary: This critical review focuses on the preparation, modification, application and regeneration of biosorbents, nanoparticles, and magnetic biosorbents for wastewater treatment. The development of magnetic biosorbents is highlighted due to their variable active sites, high specific surface area, easy separation, and low cost. Chemical activations such as acid, alkali, and salt activations are discussed to improve the adsorption performance of biosorbents. The surface characteristics and chemistry of biosorbents and magnetic biosorbents, including electrostatic interaction, 7C-7C interaction, and hydrogen bonding, are emphasized. The effects of solution pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of pollutants, adsorption duration, and temperature on the adsorption capacity and removal efficiency are analyzed. The review concludes with a summary, challenges, and future outlook of magnetic biosorbents, aiming to provide insights for cost-effective and scalable adsorbents for environmental remediation.
