Nanosized titanium dioxide elevates toxicity of cationic metals species for Daphnia - have aging and natural organic matter an unexpected impact?

Rajdeep Roy et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of interactions between nanosized titanium dioxide particles (nTiO(2)) and natural organic matter (NOM) on the ecotoxicity of co-occurring metals. The results showed that nTiO(2) increased the toxicity of metals with cationic species, but had no impact on metals with anionic species. Additionally, natural organic matter reduced the toxicity of one metal, and the interaction between metals and nTiO(2) occurred quickly.

Soil organic matter and biological activity under long-term contamination with copper

Inna V. Zamulina et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of chronic long-term soil contamination with copper on organic matter and biological activity in Spolic Technosols, finding that increasing copper levels altered the chemical composition of the soil and increased solubility of organic matter, leading to an increase in microbial adaptation to the environmental factor. The long-term contamination with copper adversely affected the number of soil bacteria, but active and potentially active bacteria were still observed in highly contaminated soils, indicating a potential ecosystem disruption caused by changes in soil organic matter and microbial communities.

Chunni Yan et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the effects of graphene oxide (GO) on nitrogen transformation in constructed wetlands (CWs). It was found that GO was harmful to nitrogen removal, delaying the process and affecting key enzymes and genes involved in nitrogen transformation. Additionally, GO feeding led to changes in the microbial communities related to nitrogen transformation, but collaborative microbial pathways were still observed.

Occurrence and size distribution of silver nanoparticles in wastewater effluents from various treatment processes in Canada

Christian Gagnon et al.

Summary: The presence of Ag NPs in urban effluents was confirmed, with higher concentrations in the 20-34 nm size fraction compared to larger particles. The proportion of nanoscale Ag (1-100 nm) in effluent samples was consistently less than 8% of total suspended Ag concentrations, regardless of origin. A significant linear correlation (r(2) > 0.7) was observed between Ag NP and total suspended Ag concentrations in investigated effluents, highlighting the importance of size distribution and exposure concentration for nanoparticle risk assessment.
