A novel multistage anoxic/aerobic process with sludge regeneration zone (R-MAO) for advanced nitrogen removal from domestic sewage

Lin Cao et al.

Summary: A novel multistage anoxic/aerobic process with sludge regeneration zone (R-MAO) was developed to achieve advanced nitrogen removal from actual municipal sewage. The study investigated the nitrogen removal capacity of the sludge regeneration zone (R zone) during long-term operation. The results showed that the R zone performed best at an Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) of 50 +/- 30 mV and hydraulic residence times (HRT) of 1.2 hr. The R-MAO process achieved high removal efficiencies for COD, TN, and NH4+-N, and the TN removal efficiency of the R-MAO was higher compared to the sole MAO system. High-throughput sequencing results identified specific bacteria that played important roles in denitrification in the R zone.

Novel continuous up-flow MFC for treatment of produced water: Flow rate effect, microbial community, and flow simulation

Jonnathan Cabrera et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of a continuous up-flow MFC fed solely with produced water, finding that the best power density and pollutant removal efficiency were achieved at a flowrate of 0.4 mL/s. The fluctuation in performance was attributed to changes in internal resistance, with flow simulation revealing that higher flowrates created turbulence which hindered proton transportation and increased internal resistance. Major bacteria identified in the microbial community analysis included Desulfuromonas, Desulfovibrio, and Geoalkalibacter, responsible for pollutant removal and electricity production.

The nitrification recovery capacity is the key to enhancing nitrogen removal in the AOA system at low temperatures

Xinjie Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the nitrogen removal performance of AOA process at low and room temperatures. The results showed that the nitrification capacity of AOA process was recovered at low temperature and the endogenous denitrification performance was enhanced by converting the partial aerobic zone into anoxic. The activity and abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) increased at low temperature, which was the key for nitrification capacity recovery. Overall, AOA system showed the possibility of advanced nitrogen removal at low temperatures.

Mixotrophic denitrification using pyrite and biodegradable polymer composite as electron donors

Yunmeng Pang et al.

Summary: This study investigated a novel mixotrophic system using pyrite and biodegradable polymer composite as electron donors. Results showed that the mixotrophic system had a higher nitrate removal rate compared to the single heterotrophic and autotrophic systems. XPS analysis identified the formation of sulfur compounds and iron compounds on the pyrite surface during mixotrophic operation. Microbial function analysis revealed the enrichment of genes involved in sulfur oxidation, denitrification, and carbon fixation in the mixotrophic system.

Zhongshuo Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in nitrate and phosphorus removal from municipal tailwater between volcanic and pyrite supported biofilters. The results showed that pyrite-involved mixotrophic denitrification led to higher nitrate removal efficiency due to the synergistic effect of influent organic and pyrite, while chemical phosphorus removal resulted in consistently higher phosphorus removal efficiency. The study also deduced the mechanism of simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the pyrite-involved mixotrophic denitrification process.

Ameliorating effect of nitrate on nitrite inhibition for denitrifying P-accumulating organisms

Ivar Zekker et al.

Summary: Lowering air supply and organic carbon demand are key factors in reducing wastewater treatment costs and preventing eutrophication. Utilizing denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAOs) in the denitrifying PO4-- removal (DPR) process with nitrate has shown efficient removal of COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus in wastewater with high nitrite and nitrate content.
