Behaviors of lithium and its isotopes in groundwater with different concentrations of dissolved CO2

Tao-Tao Ji et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of lithium isotopes in deep groundwater and their relationship with dissolved CO2 concentrations. The findings highlight the influence of weathering and physical adsorption on lithium enrichment or removal in groundwater. Understanding these processes can contribute to the application of lithium isotopes in subsurface water.

Origin of Boron in the Gas Hure Salt Lake of Northwestern Qaidam Basin, China: Evidence from Hydrochemistry and Boron Isotopes

Jiabin Han et al.

Summary: The study of the Gas Hure Salt Lake in western China shows that the boron resources mainly come from silicates, carbonates and evaporates. The estimation of boron reservoir indicates that the Kulamulekesay River and the Atekan River contribute significant amounts of boron, which undergo an evaporation process to increase boron concentration and enrichment.

Experimental weathering of a volcaniclastic critical zone profile: Key role of colloidal constituents in aqueous geochemical response

B. G. Moravec et al.

Summary: Weathering profiles are complex and vary from near surface highly transformed materials to less weathered parent materials at depth. The impact of material properties on mineral weathering rates is difficult to resolve from field data, especially when different depths of the profiles are reacted with aggressive meteoric waters. Experimental weathering of extracted cores in controlled laboratory conditions showed mineral transformation rates depend on mineral assemblage, texture, and legacy of hydrothermal alteration.

Lithium and its isotopes behavior during incipient weathering of granite in the eastern Tibetan Plateau, China

Jun-Wen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior of Li isotopes during granite weathering, revealing that lithium concentrations and isotopic compositions in granite are heterogeneous, and isotopic fractionation of lithium increases with weathering intensity. The release of Li from biotite in the early stages of granite weathering leads to significant isotopic fractionation, contributing to higher delta Li-7 values in the dissolved load from catchments with low weathering intensity.

Lithium extraction from water lithium resources through green electrochemical-battery approaches: A comprehensive review

Ye Zhang et al.

Summary: The growing market demand for lithium, especially for applications like lithium-ion batteries, highlights the importance of lithium production. Extraction of lithium from water resources, particularly those with high Mg/Li ratios, is becoming more popular due to its low cost and abundant reserves. Among various aqueous lithium-extraction methods, the electrochemical-battery approach is considered the most promising due to its excellent lithium selectivity, high insertion capacity, low energy consumption, high reversibility, and eco-friendliness. Future research should focus on enhancing battery-system stability, process optimization, and reducing operating costs.

Recent advances in magnesium/lithium separation and lithium extraction technologies from salt lake brine

Ying Sun et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been extensive research on technologies for extracting and separating magnesium/lithium from salt lake brines, including adsorption, membrane, electrochemical, and reaction-coupled methods. While various methods have different characteristics and adaptabilities, membrane methods have attracted attention due to their low energy consumption and high separation rates.

Brine grades in Andean salars: When basin size matters A review of the Lithium Triangle

Romina Lucrecia Lopez Steinmetz et al.

Summary: This study summarized data from 477 brine samples across the Lithium Triangle in the Central Andes, revealing characteristics of brine compositions and Li concentrations distribution. It emphasized the linear proportions between the surfaces of salt pans and endorheic basins, as well as the relationship between Li concentrations and the area of salt pans and/or its basin catchments. Finally, it proposed referring to the area of all salt pans in the Andean plateau as the Lithium Crescent, which is more than three times the size of the known Lithium Triangle and has a curved crescent shape.
