Nanofiber-based systems against skin cancers: Therapeutic and protective approaches

The incidence of skin cancer has increased significantly in recent decades. Conventional therapeutic methods have limitations, so it is necessary to develop effective treatments. Modern delivery systems, such as nanofiber-based systems, have the potential to overcome complications associated with skin cancer. Electrospinning is a versatile technique that can fabricate nanofibers using natural and synthetic polymers, offering advantages for encapsulating therapeutic agents and preventing the harmful effects of radiation exposure. Additionally, incorporating therapeutic nanostructures, such as metal and magnetic nanoparticles, into nanofibers allows for multimodal treatments. This study discusses various nanofibrous-based strategies and their effectiveness in treating skin cancers.
The incidence of skin cancer (SC) has dramatically risen over the last decades. Conventional therapeutic trials possess numerous drawbacks; hence, developing effective therapies is indispensable. Modern delivery systems, e. g., nanofiber-based systems, can deliver therapeutic agents and nanostructures, which could be the harbinger of a new era to obviate SC complications. As a versatile technique, electrospinning (ES) can be applied for nanofibers (NFs) fabrication with natural and synthetic polymers or both. Such structures offer a great number of advantages because of their unique properties so that a delivery system or reservoirs can provide an adequate matrix for encapsulation and incorporation of therapeutic agents such as chemical components and natural substances as well as able to prevent the harmful impact of radiation exposure. In addition, therapeutic nanostructures, e.g., metal and magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), have been incorporated into NFs to achieve multimodal treatments like photo-thermal therapy and hyperthermia. Thus, in this study, the various mentioned nanofibrous-based strategies and their effectiveness in treating SCs have been discussed.
