Quarter-level analyses of the associations among subclinical intramammary infection and milk quality, udder health, and cheesemaking traits in Holstein cows

S. Pegolo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between subclinical intra-mammary infection (IMI) and milk composition, udder health indicators, and cheesemaking traits. The results showed that udder health indicators were associated with increased SCC and IMI, and IMI had detrimental effects on milk quality and cheesemaking ability.

Differences in the serum metabolome profile of dairy cows according to the BHB concentration revealed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR)

Anastasia Lisuzzo et al.

Summary: The mobilization of body reserves during the transition from pregnancy to lactation may lead to metabolic disorders in dairy cows. This study evaluated the differences in serum metabolome composition based on beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentration, finding metabolites related to body reserve mobilization, lipid metabolism, amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism, and ruminal fermentation.

In-line near-infrared analysis of milk coupled with machine learning methods for the daily prediction of blood metabolic profile in dairy cattle

Diana Giannuzzi et al.

Summary: Precision livestock farming technologies are used to continuously monitor animal health and welfare parameters in real time, with the aim of optimizing nutrition, productivity, and detecting health issues early. In this study, prediction equations for blood metabolites were developed using diverse machine learning methods and milk near-infrared spectra collected by the AfiLab instrument. The results showed that the stacking ensemble and multi-layer feedforward artificial neural network outperformed other methods in reducing the root mean square error for most blood parameters. However, further research is needed to improve the accuracy of the prediction equations.

Summary: Mastitis is a prevalent disease in dairy cattle causing economic losses, and DSCC has been introduced as a new indicator of intramammary infection. The study investigated the genetic variation and heritability of DSCC in Holstein cattle, finding correlations with milk composition, udder health indicators, and technological traits. The results offer insights into the relationships between udder health indicators and milk technological traits in Holstein cows.

Prolonged, low-grade inflammation in the first week of lactation: Associations with mineral, protein, and energy balance markers, and milk yield, in a clinically healthy Jersey cow cohort

L. F. Martins et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association of a prolonged inflammatory state with mineral, protein, and energy balance markers, as well as milk production in clinically healthy cows early after parturition. The results showed that cows with continually elevated haptoglobin had lower plasma calcium concentrations and reduced milk production compared to those without elevated haptoglobin. More observational studies are needed to fully characterize prolonged subclinical inflammation in cows and its long-term effects.

Differences between Holstein dairy cows in renal clearance rate of urea affect milk urea concentration and the relationship between milk urea and urinary nitrogen excretion

Carolin Beatrix Maria Mueller et al.

Summary: This study investigated nitrogen partitioning and urea metabolism in dairy cows with different milk urea concentrations under different crude protein levels. The results showed that cows with high MUN concentration did not excrete more urinary urea nitrogen than cows with low MUN concentration, and cows with high MUN concentration excreted less creatinine in urine.

Monitoring and Improving the Metabolic Health of Dairy Cows during the Transition Period

Luciano S. Caixeta et al.

Summary: The peripartum period of dairy cows is marked by significant physiological and behavioral changes in response to increased nutrient demands. Adequate adaptation to these demands is crucial for successful lactation, with monitoring and early disease detection being essential to avoid health and production issues. Various strategies can be implemented to improve metabolic health and performance during this transition period.

Summary: The composition of milk and the duration of lactation vary among different mammalian species, aiming to meet the specific nutritional needs of the offspring. The intact blood-milk barrier (BMB) is essential for maintaining the optimal milk composition by selectively allowing necessary components to pass through while preventing uncontrolled exchanges between blood and milk.
