Factors Associated with Antimicrobial Stewardship Practices on California Dairies: One Year Post Senate Bill 27

Essam M. Abdelfattah et al.

Summary: This study investigates the factors associated with antimicrobial drug (AMD) use and stewardship practices on conventional California (CA) dairies. The findings suggest that factors such as having a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, using preventive alternatives to AMD, and changing management practices are associated with familiarity with medically important antimicrobial drugs (MIADs), decreased use of MIADs previously available over the counter (OTC), and improved animal health. These survey findings can contribute to promoting antimicrobial stewardship practices on dairies.

Assessing the effect of case-based teaching compared to lecture-based teaching on students' knowledge and perceptions in a senior undergraduate dairy cattle management course

L. Ferree et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of case-based (CB) and lecture-based (LB) teaching methods on student performance and attitudes in animal science education. The results showed that CB teaching methods had a tendency to improve multiple choice quiz scores, while there were no significant differences in total quiz scores and short answer quiz scores between CB and LB groups. Students expressed higher satisfaction with LB teaching methods but also showed a preference for using case studies to acquire information.

A Focus Group Study of Canadian Dairy Farmers' Attitudes and Social Referents on Antimicrobial Use and Antimicrobial Resistance

Claudia Cobo-Angel et al.

Summary: A study on Canadian dairy farmers revealed that they usually make decisions on antimicrobial use based on past experience and individual disease cases, with external referents including other farmers and family members. The farmers prioritize cattle welfare and are unwilling to compromise it for reducing antimicrobial use. Cost of investing in disease prevention facilities is seen as a major barrier to reducing antimicrobial use.
