The influences of distraction osteogenesis therapy on airway morphology in patients with craniofacial microsomia

Qi-li Peng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the morphological changes in the oropharynx and laryngopharynx following mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO). The results showed a significant increase in airway volume, expansion of the oropharynx and laryngopharynx, suggesting MDO as a clinically useful treatment for changing the structures of the oropharynx and laryngopharynx.

What is the impact of distraction osteogenesis on the upper airway of hemifacial microsomia patient with obstructive sleep apnea: a case report

Rongyang Wang et al.

Summary: Current research on hemifacial microsomia (HFM) patients after distraction osteogenesis (DO) focuses on morphological changes. This case report demonstrates that DO can effectively treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in HFM patients by expanding the upper airway and reducing respiratory resistance. The findings are based on polysomnography and CT scans performed on an 11-year-old boy with HFM and OSA, showing improved oxygen saturation and reduced apnea and hypopnea events after DO.
