Isolated and dynamical black hole mergers with B-POP: the role of star formation and dynamics, star cluster evolution, natal kicks, mass and spins, and hierarchical mergers

Manuel Arca Sedda et al.

Summary: The current interpretation of LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA data suggests that the population of merging binary black holes (BBHs) at redshift z ? 1 contains multiple structures and relatively low spins. Theoretical models of BBH formation in various environments need to consider stellar evolution, dynamics, galaxy evolution, and general relativity. The B-POP population synthesis tool is used to study the effects of BH formation channels, star cluster evolution, hierarchical mergers, and natal BH properties on the population of BBH mergers.

Gravitational waves from double white dwarfs as probes of the milky way

Maria Georgousi et al.

Summary: Future gravitational wave detectors like LISA will be able to resolve a significant number of ultra compact stellar-mass binaries, mostly double white dwarfs, and directly correlate their characteristics to the properties of the Galaxy. By investigating the spectral shape and amplitude of the confusion foreground signal, a framework is proposed to infer the total stellar mass. Simulations of LISA data show that the DWD frequency, coalescence time, and chirp mass distributions can be reconstructed without bias.

Probing neutrino interactions and dark radiation with gravitational waves

Marilena Loverde et al.

Summary: We study the modulation of the standard damping of gravitational waves by free-streaming radiation due to the decoupling (or recoupling) of interactions. We focus on nonstandard neutrino interactions in effect after the decoupling of weak interactions as well as more general scenarios in the early Universe involving other light relics. Finally, we compute the imprint of neutrino interactions on the B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background, and we comment on other means to infer the presence of such effects at higher frequencies.

Impact of LIGO-Virgo black hole binaries on gravitational wave background searches

Marek Lewicki et al.

Summary: We investigated the influence of the black hole binary population detected by LIGO-Virgo on the future search for the primordial gravitational wave background. By estimating the foreground generated by the binaries using observed event rates and a simple modeling of the black hole population, we were able to subtract individually resolvable binaries and determine sensitivity curves for power-law signals that include these astrophysical foregrounds through Fisher analysis. Even under optimistic assumptions, we found that the reach of future experiments would be severely diminished.

The cosmic evolution of binary black holes in young, globular, and nuclear star clusters: rates, masses, spins, and mixing fractions

Michela Mapelli et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cosmic evolution of different populations of binary black holes (BBHs) using upgraded semi-analytical codes. The results show that the merger rate density of BBHs in globular clusters (GCs) and nuclear star clusters (NSCs) is not significantly affected by stellar metallicity, while the rate of isolated BBHs changes with metallicity. The behavior of BBHs in young star clusters (YSCs) is intermediate between isolated and GC/NSC BBHs. The local merger rate density of Nth-generation black holes is mostly influenced by the spin parameter. The primary black hole mass function evolves with redshift in GCs and NSCs but remains constant in YSCs and in the field.

Observationally driven Galactic double white dwarf population for LISA

Valeriya Korol et al.

Summary: This study aims to construct an observationally driven population model of the Galactic double white dwarf (DWD) population. Through statistical analysis of two large spectroscopic samples, the research finds that observationally driven estimates yield more individually detectable DWDs than traditional binary population synthesis methods, and the shape of the DWD confusion foreground is also significantly different. These results have important implications for the LISA mission.

If loud stochastic gravitational waves are discovered, LISA can measure the free streaming fraction of the universe with 100 times more sensitivity than current constraints. Future detectors like DECIGO would be even more sensitive and capable of testing other motivated scenarios.

Constraints on the contributions to the observed binary black hole population from individual evolutionary pathways in isolated binary evolution

Simon Stevenson et al.

Summary: Gravitational waves from merging binary black holes provide insights into the poorly understood aspects of massive binary stellar evolution. This paper examines the impact of different phases on the predictions for the merger rate and chirp mass distribution of merging binary black holes and identifies possible correlations between model parameters. The study finds that a significant number of detectable binary black holes may arise from the chemically homogeneous evolution scenario, which tends to overpredict the merger rate and produce systems that are too massive. The findings also suggest a potential connection between the mass-loss rates of Wolf-Rayet stars and the metallicity evolution on the rates and properties of merging binary black holes.

Binary black hole merger rates in AGN discs versus nuclear star clusters: loud beats quiet

K. E. Saavik Ford et al.

Summary: Research shows that the merger rate of binary black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is always higher than that in quiescent galactic nuclei around supermassive black holes (SMBHs). This is mainly due to the shorter binary lifetimes in AGNs and the enhancement of merger rates through gas-driven binary formation mechanisms. The formation of new black holes in AGN discs has a minor contribution to the rate differences.

Gravitational background from dynamical binaries and detectability with 2G detectors

Carole Perigois et al.

Summary: We investigate the influence of young clusters on the gravitational wave background generated by compact binary coalescence. By simulating a catalog of different sources and considering uncertainties, we find that the background is mainly determined by binary black holes, and the obtained energy density value matches the actual upper limits. Additionally, we discover that a significant number of sources within a specific mass range leads to a bump in the background, which can be detected using a network of 2G detectors.

Building Better Spin Models for Merging Binary Black Holes: Evidence for Nonspinning and Rapidly Spinning Nearly Aligned Subpopulations

Shanika Galaudage et al.

Summary: Recent studies on the distribution of black hole spins in merging binaries measured with gravitational waves have produced conflicting results. Some analyses suggest a significant fraction of binaries have black holes with spins tilted >90 degrees, while others propose a bimodal population with black holes either having negligible spins or aligned spin vectors. This study reanalyzes data from the LIGO-Virgo catalog using a revised spin model and suggests the presence of two distinct subpopulations, one with black holes of negligible spin and another with spin vectors preferentially aligned with the orbital angular momentum.

Summary: This study investigates LISA's sensitivity to the thermodynamic parameters encoded in the stochastic background produced by a phase transition using the sound shell model to characterize the gravitational wave power spectrum and the Fisher matrix to estimate uncertainties. The power spectrum in the sound shell model can be well approximated by a four-parameter double broken power law, and the peak power and frequency can be measured to approximately 10% accuracy for signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) above 20. Causal gravitational waves as a probe of free streaming particles and the expansion of the Universe

Anson Hook et al.

Summary: This article focuses on analyzing the low frequency end of the gravitational wave spectrum, explaining the phenomena of suppressed production of gravitational waves due to the excitation of an over-damped harmonic oscillator and their enhancement when frozen outside the horizon from a physics perspective. The differences between sub-horizon and super-horizon physics lead to distinct spectral features that can directly measure the conformal Hubble rate at which a phase transition occurred. Additionally, the presence of free-streaming particles during a phase transition affects the behavior of super-horizon modes in the spectrum, resulting in oscillatory features and a steeper decrease in the spectrum at low frequencies.
