The International Pulsar Timing Array second data release: Search for an isotropic gravitational wave background

J. Antoniadis et al.

Summary: In this study, we searched for an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background using the second data release of the International Pulsar Timing Array. We found evidence for a spectrally similar low-frequency stochastic process and demonstrated that the combined international data set is more sensitive. Although no significant evidence of a gravitational-wave origin was found, future international data releases are expected to increase sensitivity and detection probability.

Searching for isotropic stochastic gravitational-wave background in the international pulsar timing array second data release

Zu-Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: In the International Pulsar Timing Array second data release, we found strong evidence for a common-spectrum process with scalar transverse correlations. However, there was no evidence for the tensor transverse mode.

Common-red-signal analysis with 24-yr high-precision timing of the European Pulsar Timing Array: inferences in the stochastic gravitational-wave background search

S. Chen et al.

Summary: This study searched for a stochastic gravitational-wave background (GWB) using data from six radio millisecond pulsars, finding spectral properties consistent with theoretical predictions but lacking the required HD correlation for GWB detection. The most favored model was found to be common uncorrelated red noise, with the results being marginally influenced by Solar system ephemeris effects.

Non-tensorial gravitational wave background in NANOGrav 12.5-year data set

Zu-Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study in the NANOGrav data found strong Bayesian evidence for an isotropic non-tensorial gravitational-wave background with scalar transverse correlations. However, no statistically significant evidence was found for other polarization modes.

On the Evidence for a Common-spectrum Process in the Search for the Nanohertz Gravitational-wave Background with the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array

Boris Goncharov et al.

Summary: A nanohertz-frequency stochastic gravitational-wave background can be potentially detected through the precise timing of millisecond pulsars, revealing a common-spectrum component. Recent data supports the presence of a common-spectrum process, but analysis may suffer from model misspecification. Extensions and combinations of datasets will improve the prospects of identifying spatial correlations necessary for claiming a detection of the gravitational-wave background.

Upper limits on the isotropic gravitational-wave background from Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo's third observing run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This study reports the results of a search for an isotropic gravitational-wave background using data from advanced detectors, placing upper limits on the strength of different types of gravitational-wave backgrounds. The study also explores the potential sources of correlated noise and compares the results to a fiducial model for the gravitational-wave background. Additionally, the study demonstrates the potential of combining results from individual mergers to provide stronger constraints on the merger rate of binary black holes.
