Probing cosmic inflation with the LiteBIRD cosmic microwave background polarization survey

E. Allys et al.

Summary: LiteBIRD is a space mission that aims to explore the origins of the universe and fundamental physics. It will be launched by JAXA in the late 2020s and will orbit the Sun-Earth Lagrange point L2. LiteBIRD will map the cosmic microwave background polarization over the entire sky for three years using three telescopes in 15 frequency bands.

Detailed study of HWP non-idealities and their impact on future measurements of CMB polarization anisotropies from space

S. Giardiello et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of a specific class of instrumental systematics on the reconstruction of the B-mode power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The focus is on the non-ideal properties of the half-wave plate (HWP), which is a polarization modulator used in future CMB experiments. The effects of non-ideal HWP properties, such as transmittance, phase shift, and cross-polarization, are studied using a simulation pipeline adapted to the LiteBIRD mission. The systematic effects on the tensor-to-scalar ratio are quantified, and accuracy requirements for the measurements of HWP properties are derived.

In-flight polarization angle calibration for LiteBIRD: blind challenge and cosmological implications

N. Krachmalnicoff et al.

Summary: We demonstrate the in-flight polarization angle calibration for the LiteBIRD strategic large class mission and assess its impact on the measurement of the tensor-to-scalar ratio parameter, r, using simulated data. Our calibration method relies on nulling the cross correlation of the polarized signal in each frequency channel. We find that angle miscalibration biases results obtained with parametric fitting methods but has less impact on algorithms that do not assume foreground properties. Both component separation algorithms result in unbiased estimation of the r parameter once the miscalibration angles are corrected. This work provides a robust framework for polarization experiments and offers insights for the design of future missions.

Frequency-dependent constraints on cosmic birefringence from the LFI and HFI Planck Data Release 4

J. R. Eskilt

Summary: This study presents new constraints on the frequency dependence of the cosmic birefringence angle using data from the Planck Data Release 4 polarization maps. The results are consistent with predictions from an axion field coupled to electromagnetism and Faraday rotation from local magnetic fields. The findings provide valuable insights into the nature of cosmic birefringence.

A Constraint on Primordial B-modes from the First Flight of the Spider Balloon-borne Telescope

P. A. R. Ade et al.

Summary: This article presents the first linear polarization measurements from the 2015 long-duration balloon flight of Spider, which is an experiment designed to map the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on degree angular scales. The results show detections of Galactic dust emission with high significance and employ two independent foreground-removal techniques to explore the sensitivity of the cosmological result. Upper limits on the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio are derived, complementing the Planck polarization maps.

Improved constraints on cosmic birefringence from the WMAP and Planck cosmic microwave background polarization data

Johannes R. Eskilt et al.

Summary: In this study, new measurements of cosmic birefringence are presented from a joint analysis of polarization data from the Planck and WMAP space missions. The results show that the plane of linear polarization of cosmic microwave background photons may have rotated during their 13 billion-year journey, with no evidence of frequency dependence. This finding has significant implications for the study of physics violating parity symmetry.

New physics from the polarized light of the cosmic microwave background

Eiichiro Komatsu

Summary: The polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) holds clues to the nature of dark matter and dark energy, as well as the origin of structures in the Universe. Two phenomena that could be observed in CMB data are cosmic birefringence, which could indicate violations of symmetry, and the presence of primordial gravitational waves generated during cosmic inflation.

Probing frequency-dependent half-wave plate systematics for CMB experiments with full-sky beam convolution simulations

Adriaan J. Duivenvoorden et al.

Summary: This study investigates systematic effects of half-wave plates (HWPs) on cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments through full-sky time-domain beam convolution simulations. The research shows that different HWP configurations have varying impacts on the reconstruction of primordial B-mode polarization due to different frequency dependence. Additionally, realistic beam models may cause significant B-mode residuals that need to be extensively modeled in some cases, once interactions with HWPs are taken into account.

The Origin of Parity Violation in Polarized Dust Emission and Implications for Cosmic Birefringence

S. E. Clark et al.

Summary: Recent measurements of Galactic polarized dust emission have found a nonzero TB signal, a correlation between total intensity and B-mode polarization component. The results suggest that magnetically misaligned filamentary dust structures introduce nonzero TB and EB correlations in dust polarization. Searches for parity violation in the cosmic microwave background must account for the nonzero Galactic EB and TB signals.

Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization as a Tool to Constrain the Optical Properties of the Universe

Margherita Lembo et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new formalism to describe the conversion between polarization states of radiation in the context of cosmology, known as the generalized Faraday effect (GFE). By applying this formalism to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarized anisotropy power spectra, the study provides insights into the potential implications of GFE on isotropy- and/or parity-violating physics. The research highlights the possibility of GFE inducing the conversion of linear polarization into circular polarization, and suggests observational bounds on GFE-induced CMB circularly polarized power spectrum.

Measurements of the E-mode polarization and temperature-E-mode correlation of the CMB from SPT-3G 2018 data

D. Dutcher et al.

Summary: In this study, measurements of the E-mode polarization power spectrum and temperature-E-mode cross-power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background were presented using data collected by SPT-3G. The results improve upon previous findings, providing constraints on cosmological parameters and showing a good fit with the.aCDM cosmological model. Combining the SPT-3G and Planck data sets led to tighter constraints on the aCDM model without significant shifts in central values.
