Avoidance of Strong Coupling in General Relativity Solutions with a Timelike Scalar Profile in a Class of Ghost-Free Scalar-Tensor Theories

Antonio De Felice et al.

Summary: In modified gravity theories, the strong coupling problem of stealth solutions can be avoided with the use of U-DHOST theories. Additionally, the existence of a nonpropagating mode in U-DHOST theories is clarified.

Generalized Regge-Wheeler equation from Effective Field Theory of black hole perturbations with a timelike scalar profile

Shinji Mukohyama et al.

Summary: In this study, the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of perturbations on an arbitrary background metric with a timelike scalar profile was generalized in the context of scalar-tensor theories. The dictionary between the coefficients in the EFT action and those in covariant theories was expanded to include shift-and reflection-symmetric quadratic higher-order scalar-tensor theories, such as DHOST and U-DHOST. The dynamics of odd-parity perturbations on a static and spherically symmetric black hole background with a timelike scalar profile were investigated using the EFT action. The generalized Regge-Wheeler equation obtained in this study can be used to determine the spectrum of quasinormal modes and tidal Love numbers.

Effective field theory of black hole perturbations with timelike scalar profile: formulation

Shinji Mukohyama et al.

Summary: This study formulates the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of perturbations within scalar-tensor theories on an inhomogeneous background. A set of consistency relations imposed by the invariance of the EFT under the 3d spatial diffeomorphism is found. This EFT can be applied generically to any in-homogeneous background metric as long as the scalar profile is everywhere timelike.

Linear stability of black holes with static scalar hair in full Horndeski theories: Generic instabilities and surviving models

Masato Minamitsuji et al.

Summary: In this paper, the stability of black hole solutions with a static scalar field in full Horndeski theories is studied. The results show that these solutions, with a nonvanishing kinetic term on the black hole horizon, are prone to ghost/Laplacian instabilities. Then, by introducing certain coupling functions, a class of hairy black hole solutions with a vanishing kinetic term on the horizon and free from ghost/Laplacian instabilities is found. Finally, the stability of hairy black hole solutions in power-law F(R2GB) gravity is investigated, and ghost instabilities are found to exist.

Linear stability of black holes in shift-symmetric Horndeski theories with a time-independent scalar field

Masato Minamitsuji et al.

Summary: In this article, we study linear perturbations about static and spherically symmetric black holes in shift-symmetric Horndeski theories. We clarify conditions for the absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities and investigate various black hole solutions in both reflection-symmetric and nonreflection-symmetric theories.

Effective Field Theory for the perturbations of a slowly rotating black hole

Lam Hui et al.

Summary: This study develops an effective theory in two directions for perturbations around black holes with scalar hair, including transformations of the scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory and perturbations around an axisymmetric, slowly rotating black hole. By utilizing methods like galileon operators, the effective theory for perturbations efficiently describes and constrains a broad range of scalar-tensor theories.

Stealth dark energy in scordatura DHOST theory

Mohammad Ali Gorji et al.

Summary: In the context of scalar-tensor theories, stealth de Sitter solutions face issues of infinite strong coupling or gradient instability, which can be resolved by introducing a controlled detuning mechanism known as scordatura. This mechanism not only resolves the mentioned issues, but also ensures a well-defined quasi-static limit.

Black hole perturbations in DHOST theories: master variables, gradient instability, and strong coupling

Kazufumi Takahashi et al.

Summary: We studied linear perturbations about static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with stealth scalar hair in degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. Master variables were clarified and the quadratic Lagrangian for both odd- and even-parity perturbations was derived. It was found that the even modes are generally plagued by gradient instabilities, or else the perturbations would be strongly coupled.
