Neuromodulation Enables Temperature Robustness and Coupling Between Fast and Slow Oscillator Circuits

Carola Stadele et al.

Summary: Acute temperature changes can disrupt neuronal activity and coordination, but two rhythmic neuronal circuits in the crustacean stomatogastric ganglion (STG) can maintain their coordination across a broad temperature range. Extrinsic factors play a crucial role in the temperature robustness of the slow gastric mill rhythm, while intrinsic properties enable the temperature robustness of the coupling between pyloric and gastric mill rhythms. However, degenerate circuit properties can lead to idiosyncratic responses to environmental challenges.
