Toward Quantum Computing with Molecular Electronics

Phillip W. K. Jensen et al.

Summary: This study explores the application of molecules and molecular electronics in quantum computing, constructing one-qubit gates using scattering in molecules and two-qubit controlled-phase gates using electron-electron scattering along metallic leads. Furthermore, a class of circuit implementations is proposed, and the framework is demonstrated by illustrating one-qubit gates using the molecular electronic structure of molecular hydrogen as a baseline model.

Effects of Dynamical Degrees of Freedom on Magnetic Compass Sensitivity: A Comparison of Plant and Avian Cryptochromes

Gesa Gruening et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of thermal motion on the sensitivity of a magnetic compass in migratory birds. The findings suggest that the fluctuations in dynamical parameters and hyperfine interactions due to thermal motion can significantly affect the spin dynamics. Therefore, future research should consider the ensemble properties of hyperfine interactions.

Toward exact predictions of spin-phonon relaxation times: An ab initio implementation of open quantum systems theory

Alessandro Lunghi

Summary: Spin-phonon coupling plays a crucial role in spin relaxation and decoherence in solid-state semiconductors. This study combines advanced electronic structure methods with time-local master equations to predict spin-phonon relaxation times in various solid-state coordination compounds, demonstrating the feasibility of an accurate and fully ab initio implementation of spin relaxation theory.

Magnetic field effects in biology from the perspective of the radical pair mechanism

Hadi Zadeh-Haghighi et al.

Summary: This article reviews the impact of weak magnetic fields on biological systems and proposes an explanation based on the radical pair mechanism. By studying static, hypomagnetic, and oscillating magnetic fields, as well as isotope effects, it is found that magnetosensitivity is widespread throughout biology.

Spectral Addressability in a Modular Two Qubit System

Stephen von Kugelgen et al.

Summary: Synthetic chemistry allows for precise control of spin-spin distance in molecular qubits, with electron spins having negligible impact on coherence times across a range of distances. Instead, coherence times are primarily influenced by the distance to nuclear spins on the ligand framework of the other qubit.

Magnetic sensitivity of cryptochrome 4 from a migratory songbird

Jingjing Xu et al.

Summary: Night-migratory songbirds show remarkable navigation abilities using a light-dependent magnetic compass mechanism suggested to rely on quantum spin dynamics. Research reveals that the photochemistry of CRY4 from the night-migratory European robin is more sensitive to magnetic fields than from non-migratory bird species, with specific mutations showing the roles of flavin-tryptophan radical pairs.
