Warm and arid regions of the world are hotspots of superorganism complexity

Frederique La Richeliere et al.

Summary: This study investigated the geographical distribution of worker polymorphism in ants and found that arid regions are hotspots of superorganism complexity. Tropical savannahs and deserts have the highest densities of polymorphic ants, despite being species-poor relative to tropical or temperate forests. The possible adaptive advantages of worker polymorphism in arid environments are discussed.

Social Factors in Heat Survival: Multiqueen Desert Ant Colonies Have Higher and More Uniform Heat Tolerance

Kaitlin M. Baudier et al.

Summary: Investigating thermally adaptive behavioral phenotypes is crucial for understanding climate as a selective force and predicting global species distributions under climate change. This study examines the effects of social strategies on thermal tolerance in a desert ant species, and finds that cooperative nest founding enhances worker thermal tolerances, enabling increased foraging in hot environments.

Desiccation limits recruitment in the pleometrotic desert seed-harvester ant Veromessor pergandei

Robert A. Johnson

Summary: The desert harvester ant Veromessor pergandei displays geographic variation in colony founding behavior, with different initiation patterns in response to rainfall levels. Laboratory experiments showed a positive association between water level and queen survival and brood production, suggesting the importance of water availability for single queen nests. Long-term monitoring in central Arizona indicated that recruitment only occurred in years with above-average rainfall, supporting the hypothesis that pleometrosis evolved to enhance colony survival in harsh abiotic conditions.

Eco-genetics of desiccation resistance in Drosophila

Yiwen Wang et al.

Summary: Climate change globally affects water circulation, which in turn influences ecosystems and cultivated land. Both harmful and beneficial insects are vulnerable to these changes and employ various strategies to adapt. Drosophila species use behavioral, physiological, and genetic mechanisms to combat desiccation risks.
