Direct Z-scheme photochemical hybrid systems: Loading porphyrin-based metal-organic cages on graphitic-C3N4 to dramatically enhance photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Yang Lei et al.

Summary: The rational design of photochemical molecular devices (PMDs) and their hybrid systems can significantly enhance the activity of photocatalytic hydrogen production. By combining metalloporphyrin-based ligands with catalytically active Pd2+ centers, a series of Pd6L3-type metal-organic cages (MOCs) were designed as PMDs. These MOCs were successfully hybridized with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) through pi-pi interactions to form direct Z-scheme heterogeneous photocatalysts. Among them, MOC-Py-Zn/g-C3N4 exhibited the highest H2 production activity under visible light, surpassing MOC-Py-H/g-C3N4 and MOC-Py-Cu/g-C3N4. The Z-scheme hybrid system also demonstrated enhanced turnover number (TON) values, making it one of the most efficient photochemical systems for visible-light-driven hydrogen generation.
