Recent advances in cellulose supported photocatalysis for pollutant mitigation: A review

ZnIn2S4-based photocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution via water splitting

Summary: Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution via water splitting is a promising solution to the energy crisis and environmental pollution, and the development of advanced semiconductor photocatalysts is crucial. Zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn2S4) has excellent semiconductor properties and has been extensively studied for PHE application. This review briefly introduces the crystal and band structures of ZnIn2S4, and discusses the performance regulation through morphology modulation, structure design, doping method, and vacancy engineering. Furthermore, the loading of co-catalysts and the construction of heterojunctions for advanced ZnIn2S4-based photocatalysts are reviewed in detail. Finally, the challenges and prospects for developing advanced photocatalysts based on ZnIn2S4 are discussed.

Fabrication of 3D CuS@ZnIn2S4 hierarchical nanocages with 2D/2D nanosheet subunits p-n heterojunctions for improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Summary: Photocatalysis based on metal sulfide semiconductors is considered an economic and clean technology, but faces challenges such as low solar energy utilization and fast recombination of photo-generated carriers. This study successfully developed a hollow heterostructure photocatalyst to enhance solar energy utilization efficiency and separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers, achieving a high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate. The strong interaction between CuS and ZnIn2S4 in the 2D/2D hetero-interfaces was found to significantly facilitate the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers.

Preparation of TiO2 photocatalyst microspheres by geopolymer technology for the degradation of tetracycline

Summary: In this study, TiO2-based geopolymer microspheres (TiO2@GMs) were prepared using water glass activated metakaolin-based geopolymer slurry as a binder. The factors affecting the sphericity and particle size of TiO2@GMs were investigated, and the order of importance was determined. Under UV light irradiation in the Fenton system, TiO2@GMs showed excellent performance in the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). TiO2@GMs can be easily separated from the reaction product and showed excellent recycling performance. The newly designed TiO2@GMs composite can be considered as an alternative material for the degradation of TC and similar antibiotics on a large scale.

ZnIn2S4/CoFe2O4 p-n junction-decorated biochar as magnetic recyclable nanocomposite for efficient photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin under simulated sunlight

Summary: This study investigates the synthesis and characterization of a p-n junction ZnIn2S4/CoFe2O4 and biochar composite photocatalyst, and its photocatalytic activity towards ciprofloxacin under simulated sunlight. The composite exhibits enhanced charge carrier separation, excellent light absorption intensity, and hierarchical porous morphology. The introduction of biochar prevents the agglomeration of nanoparticles and promotes charge carrier mobility. The synergy between biochar adsorption and p-n junction photocatalytic activity greatly improves pho-todegradation performance. The study also explores the effects of coexisting anions and humic acid on the photocatalytic process, and proposes a possible mechanism. Overall, this study provides new insights into the fabrication of recyclable photocatalysts for environmental purification.

Summary: Exploiting atomic-level principles to optimize charge transfer in ultrathin 2D heterostructures is a promising approach for addressing energy and environmental challenges. This study presents a novel topological-atom-extraction protocol that selectively extracts Zn from ultrathin ZnIn2S4, resulting in the formation of an atomically thin in-plane In2O3/HZIS heterostructure. This heterostructure exhibits excellent charge separation capability and significantly enhances the CO production rate compared to other heterostructure configurations.

Hollow Nanoboxes Cu2-xS@ZnIn2S4 Core-Shell S-Scheme Heterojunction with Broad-Spectrum Response and Enhanced Photothermal-Photocatalytic Performance

Summary: Major issues in photocatalysis include improving charge carrier separation efficiency at the interface of semiconductor photocatalysts and rationally developing efficient hierarchical heterostructures. This research successfully developed Cu2-xS@ZnIn2S4 photocatalysts with improved photothermal and photocatalytic performance. The photocatalyst showed significantly higher hydrogen production and tetracycline degradation efficiency compared to pure Cu2-xS and ZnIn2S4. Characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed superior photocatalytic properties and efficient carrier separation in the S-scheme heterojunction, opening up new possibilities for future catalyst design and development.

In-situ constructed 2D/2D ZnIn2S4/Bi4Ti3O12 S-scheme heterojunction for degradation of tetracycline: Performance and mechanism insights

Summary: In this study, ZnIn2S4/Bi4Ti3O12 heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized and found to exhibit excellent TC degradation under visible light. The optimized heterojunction structure showed tight contact interface and efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the difference in work function between ZnIn2S4 and Bi4Ti3O12 facilitated the migration and separation of photogenerated carriers.

Carbon dots as an electron extractant for enhanced photocatalytic antibacterial activity of covalent organic frameworks

Summary: The covalent organic framework@carbon dot (COF@CD) composite was successfully constructed, exhibiting high-flux charge transfer and efficient photocatalytic activity for antibacterial photocatalytic therapy. By establishing intramolecular charge transfer between donor-acceptor semiconductors and polymers with hydrogen-bonding groups, a charge transfer channel was created using a D-A COF semiconductor and hydrophilic CDs. The introduction of CDs greatly enhanced the charge separation efficiency and resulted in the generation of more reactive oxygen species. COF@CDs showed significant photocatalytic antibacterial activity, with a sterilization efficiency of over 95% in 1 hour under visible light irradiation.

Hierarchical Ag3PO4@ZnIn2S4 nanoscoparium: An innovative Z-scheme photocatalyst for highly efficient and predictable tetracycline degradation

Occurrence and removal of chemicals of emerging concern in wastewater treatment plants and their impact on receiving water systems

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are major sources of Emerging Chemicals of Concern (CECs) in aquatic environments, impacting aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated 164 CECs at 15 locations, with CEC concentrations varying widely between WWTPs. The K-d of CECs correlated with K-ow, allowing for prediction of their distribution in water and solids. WWTP effluent had higher CEC concentrations than upstream waters, potentially impacting downstream ecosystems.

Photocatalytic degradation of ibuprofen on S-doped BiOBr

Summary: Doping S into the lattice of BiOBr to synthesize S-BiOBr significantly enhances the degradation efficiency and kinetic constant for the visible-light-driven degradation of ibuprofen. This is attributed to the band structure tuning by S-doping, leading to higher visible light utilization efficiency. OH radicals play a synergistic role with holes in the degradation process on S-BiOBr, which is more efficient than the reported single hole- or superoxide-dominant reactions.
