Summary: This study investigated the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D metabolites and periodontitis. Observational analysis found significant relationships, but Mendelian randomization study did not support a causal role.

Circulating vitamin C and D concentrations and risk of dental caries and periodontitis: A Mendelian randomization study

Zhao Hu et al.

Summary: This Mendelian randomization study investigated the causal relationship between circulating vitamin C and D levels and dental caries and periodontitis. The results showed a potential causal association between circulating vitamin D concentrations and the number of remaining natural permanent teeth, but no significant causal relationship was found between circulating vitamin D levels and dental caries and periodontitis. Similarly, no evidence supported a causal relationship between circulating vitamin C concentrations and the risk of dental caries, number of remaining teeth, and periodontitis.

A Mendelian randomization study on the effect of 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels on periodontitis

Sebastian-Edgar Baumeister et al.

Summary: Using Mendelian randomization, this study found no significant association between genetically proxied 25OHD and periodontitis risk. Although there was a correlation at the genetic level, the effect of 25OHD levels on the risk of periodontitis appears to be minimal.

Vitamin D deficiency and C-reactive protein: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study

Ang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study used Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the causal relationship between vitamin D status and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. It was found that vitamin D deficiency is likely to cause elevated CRP levels, and correcting vitamin D deficiency may reduce chronic inflammation.

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is negatively associated with severe periodontitis: a cross-sectional study

Fangjing Zhou et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between serum 25 (OH)D and severe periodontitis using data from 2928 participants. The results revealed a nonlinear association between serum 25 (OH)D and severe periodontitis, with a negative correlation observed when serum 25 (OH)D levels were less than 102 nmol/L. Subgroup analysis showed significant changes in non-Hispanic white, alcohol consumption, diabetes, and health insurance.

Mechanism of alveolar bone destruction in periodontitis - Periodontal bacteria and inflammation

Michihiko Usui et al.

Summary: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease caused by periodontopathogenic bacteria, leading to bone tissue destruction. Osteoclast progenitor cells derived from hematopoietic stem cells differentiate into osteoclasts, which are essential for bone destruction and loss.

Periodontal inflamed surface area is associated with hs-CRP in septuagenarian Japanese adults in cross-sectional findings from the SONIC study

Summary: The study revealed a significant association between PISA values and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels, suggesting that PISA can be used to assess the impact of periodontal disease on the whole body and facilitate medical-dental cooperation.
