Summary: The study identified one variant significantly associated with DHEAS concentrations at the genome-wide level, as well as several variants with suggestive associations that may be involved in the genetic regulation of adrenarche.

Higher prepubertal IGF-1 concentrations associate to earlier pubertal tempo in both sexes

Summary: Higher prepubertal IGF-1 levels are associated with earlier thelarche and menarche in girls, and earlier gonadarche in boys. Further investigation is needed to understand the role of IGF-1 in puberty onset.

Chemerin concentrations in infants born small for gestational age: correlations with triglycerides and parameters related to glucose homeostasis

Asier Leniz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between anthropometric and biochemical parameters with circulating chemerin concentration in SGA children. Positive correlations were found between chemerin concentrations at 3 months and insulin values at 3 months, as well as with triglyceride levels at 24 months, which were maintained after adjusting for anthropometric parameters. This suggests that circulating chemerin concentration at an early age may serve as an indicator for future metabolic alterations in SGA children.

Bone density and body composition in small for gestational age children with adequate catch up growth: A preliminary retrospective case control study

Annalisa Deodati et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate bone mineral density and content of small for gestational age (SGA) children born at term who experienced normal catch-up growth compared to children born appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Results showed no differences in bone parameters between SGA and AGA children when adjusted for height and FFM. BMI, FM, and FFM were significantly correlated with bone mass parameters in both groups.

Effects of rapid growth on fasting insulin and insulin resistance: a system review and meta-analysis

Defu Ma et al.

Summary: Rapid growth is significantly associated with high levels of insulin and HOMA-IR, especially for full-term infants. However, for low birth weight infants, rapid growth does not lead to elevated levels of insulin and HOMA-IR, and may even decrease HOMA-IR levels in preterm infants.

High DHEAS in girls and metabolic features throughout pubertal maturation

Ana Pereira et al.

Summary: The study suggests that girls with high dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) at the age of adrenarche may have a higher risk of metabolic syndrome during puberty, especially those who are overweight or obese. These girls exhibited higher BMI, central fat, and serum androgen and insulin like growth factor (IGF)-I levels during puberty, and had a higher prevalence of hyperglycemia and low high-density lipoprotein at certain stages.

IGF-1 Influences Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Regulation of Puberty

William L. Dees et al.

Summary: The pubertal process is initiated by complex neuroendocrine interactions in the brain, leading to an increase in gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) has been identified as a key player in this process, with its ability to induce GnRH release and regulate the timing of puberty.

Growth and adrenarche: findings from the CATS observational study

Summary: The study reveals that anthropometric measures are positively associated with salivary androgen concentrations in pre-adolescent children, with overweight or obese individuals showing higher testosterone and DHEA concentrations. Obese individuals are more likely to have higher androgen levels compared to normal weight individuals of the same age group.

Normal and Premature Adrenarche

Robert L. Rosenfield

Summary: Adrenarche is the process of increased adrenal androgen production, typically beginning in early childhood and contributing to early puberty. Factors such as birth weight, body growth, and prolactin are related to the development of premature adrenarche, which may lead to obesity and other risks. A distinction should be made between premature adrenarche and early pubic hair development, with the former often caused by nonclassic congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
