Climate Endgame: Exploring catastrophic climate change scenarios

Luke Kemp et al.

Summary: Understanding the potential catastrophic consequences of climate change is crucial for action, resilience, and policy-making. This article outlines the current knowledge and proposes a research agenda to examine the mechanisms and impacts of extreme climate change, including mass extinction events, human mortality and morbidity, societal vulnerabilities, and integration of multiple strands of evidence.

Large lake sluice operations during an extreme rainfall season greatly affect circulation and water quality dynamics of a shallow eutrophic lake

Zhaoliang Peng et al.

Summary: The study quantified the potential effects of large lake sluice operations on water quality parameters of Lake Chaohu in China using a lake model, showing that higher lake water release rates led to accelerations in current velocity and increased concentrations of ammonium nitrogen, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, and chlorophyll-a. The modeling results also demonstrated that the effects of lake sluice operations were pronounced for four months after the operations. Higher release rates during the operation phase may help decrease TN and TP concentrations during the subsequent period as well.

Public Perception of Artificial Intelligence and Its Connections to the Sustainable Development Goals

Shin-Cheng Yeh et al.

Summary: The study found that respondents in Taiwan had high confidence in artificial intelligence, held a positive attitude but also perceived risks, and could generally be considered rational optimists. People generally believed in the synergy between AI and SDGs, with significant differences in opinions on key issues. Education was identified as a key foundation for building sustainable AI-assisted communities.

Underestimating the Challenges of Avoiding a Ghastly Future

Corey J. A. Bradshaw et al.

Summary: The article highlights the urgent need for action on major environmental issues that are often overlooked. It emphasizes the significant threats to the biosphere and humanity from future environmental conditions, and questions the preparedness of political and economic systems to handle predicted disasters. Scientists are urged to speak candidly and accurately about the challenges of creating a sustainable future, as lack of awareness on the scale of the problems and solutions hinders society from achieving sustainability goals.
