Consumer Acceptance of Plant-Based Meat Substitutes: A Narrative Review

Janos Szenderak et al.

Summary: The consumer acceptance of plant-based meat alternatives is explored in this review, where it is found that consumer behavior has complex socio-economic implications for the adoption of these substitutes. Despite plant-based meat being consistently rated higher than other substitutes, sensory and nutritional concerns still exist. Environmental and health factors may contribute to the market spread of these alternatives, but they are not sufficient on their own.

Why the Great Food Transformation may not happen-A deep-dive into our food systems' political economy, controversies and politics of evidence

Christophe Bene

Summary: This paper explores the conditions and self-reinforcing dynamics that hinder the Great Transformation of food systems called for by international experts and development agencies. The concentration of economic and market power, along with other factors such as ideology and policy incoherence, prevent the alignment of the food systems towards sustainability. While innovation is often seen as a game-changer, the profit-driven nature of its evolutionary selection fails to steer the food systems towards sustainability. A normative and global approach, with an emphasis on governance transformation, is necessary to overcome the current barriers and achieve the long-awaited sustainable transformation.

Plant-Based Innovations for the Transition to Sustainability: A Bibliometric and in-Depth Content Analysis

Malgorzata Krzywonos et al.

Summary: Plant-based innovation plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological equilibrium, stabilizing ecosystems, and promoting sustainability. Through bibliometric analysis and content research, this study identified five major research areas related to plant-based innovation: agricultural/environmental innovation, plant-based food or feed innovation, innovation within the medical/pharmaceutical research area, technology-related innovation, and economic/business aspects of plant-based innovations. Future research should focus on exploring less examined and new topics, such as the sustainability implications of various plant-based foods and the incorporation of Industry 4.0 in plant-based innovation.

M. C. Onwezen et al.

Summary: Consumers' dietary patterns have a significant impact on health and the environment, and one possible solution is to substitute meat consumption with alternative protein sources. This systematic review identifies 91 articles focusing on consumer acceptance of five alternative proteins, showing that acceptance levels vary across different types of proteins with insects and cultured meat having the lowest acceptance. Factors such as taste, health motives, familiarity, attitudes, food neophobia, disgust, and social norms drive consumer acceptance across various alternative proteins.

Eating ourselves out of industrial excess? Degrowth, multi-species conviviality and the micro-politics of cultured meat

Vision as make-believe: how narratives and models represent sociotechnical futures

Summary: This paper discusses the negotiation of visions as make-believe to give the considered feasibility of future narratives a more significant account in explaining innovation dynamics. It proposes that imagined futures depend on both material and socio-cultural constraints, with considered data, models, and artifacts giving make-believe futures a veto right and a certain kind of objectivity. The contingency of employed objects allows accounting responsibility for fictional truths to imagining subjects.
