A new mobile monitoring approach to characterize community-scale air pollution patterns and identify local high pollution zones

Yanju Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents an integrated mobile measurement and data analysis approach to study community-level air pollution patterns. The study found that traffic was the dominant primary source of air pollution in both urban and suburban settings. It also identified the contribution of regional and local sources to air pollution and suggested the use of repeated measurements for mapping air pollution patterns within the community.

Children's exposure to BC and PM pollution, and respiratory tract deposits during commuting trips to school

Jingwen Gao et al.

Summary: This study measured the exposure of children to traffic-related pollutants during their school commutes in Xi'an, China. Results showed that walking to school had the lowest exposure, while riding an e-bike led to significantly elevated exposure to PM1 and BC. Factors such as urban background concentration, traffic volume, time, and meteorological parameters influenced a child's personal exposure, and the impact varied across transportation modes.

Quantitative assessment of cyclists' exposure to PM and BC on different bike lanes

Zhaowen Qiu et al.

Summary: Real-time mobile monitoring was conducted to assess the exposure of cyclists to PM and BC in Xi'an, China. The results showed great temporal and spatial variability in cyclists' exposure, with hotspots including intersections and areas with high vehicle traffic. Bike boulevards had the lowest concentrations of PM and BC. Factors such as bike lanes, vegetation, and meteorological conditions were found to be correlated with cyclists' PM exposure, while traffic volume was the main predictor for BC exposure. PM2.5 was deposited to a greater extent in the head region, while BC was primarily deposited in the pulmonary region.

Influence of familiarity with traffic regulations on delivery riders' e-bike crashes and helmet use: Two mediator ordered logit models

Xuesong Wang et al.

Summary: Micro-mobility vehicles like e-bikes are increasingly important for transportation in urban areas, with many cities dependent on them for deliveries. Researchers have found that familiarity with traffic regulations is a crucial mediator influencing helmet use and e-bike crash occurrence among delivery riders in Shanghai. By improving riders' understanding of traffic rules, helmet usage can be increased and crash rates can be reduced.

Personal exposure to PM2.5 in five commuting modes under hazy and non-hazy conditions

Li Peng et al.

Summary: This study in Shanghai, China, found that different commuting modes led to varying levels of exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), with active commuters being exposed to higher concentrations than motorized commuters. Driving with closed windows and air conditioning was effective in reducing PM2.5 concentrations in cars. Cyclists had the highest inhaled doses of PM2.5, while car drivers had the lowest doses.

Air pollution, physical activity and health: A mapping review of the evidence

Marko Tainio et al.

Summary: The study reviewed the empirical evidence on the links between air pollution and physical activity, finding that air pollution may decrease physical activity levels during high pollution episodes. Long-term exposure to air pollution might also diminish the health gains from physical activity. Public health modelling studies suggest that in most situations, the benefits of physical activity outweigh the risks of air pollution. However, evidence for low- and middle-income countries, sensitive subpopulations, and indoor air pollution is weak.

Unravel the impact of COVID-19 on the spatio-temporal mobility patterns of microtransit

Yirong Zhou et al.

Summary: The study used eigendecomposition and k-clique percolation methods to uncover spatio-temporal patterns of microtransit trips and analyzed the impact of COVID-19 on travel behavior. Eigendecomposition illustrated the homogeneity and heterogeneity of travel patterns across temporal dimensions; k-clique percolation method detected possible community formations and tracked their evolution during the pandemic.
