Soil bacterial community structure in the habitats with different levels of heavy metal pollution at an abandoned polymetallic mine

Yue Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of soil bacterial communities to heavy metal pollution in different habitats of an abandoned polymetallic mine. The results showed significant variations in the diversity and composition of bacterial communities among different soil habitats. Heterogeneous selection played a crucial role in shaping the bacterial community composition. The study also identified key factors driving the variations in bacterial community composition, such as the total contents of Cu and Zn in tailing and remediation areas, and bioavailable Mn and Cd, total nitrogen, available nitrogen, soil organic carbon, vegetation coverage, and plant diversity in undisturbed and natural recovery areas.

Insight into variations of DOM fractions in different latitudinal rural black-odor waterbodies of eastern China using fluorescence spectros-copy coupled with structure equation model

Kuotian Lu et al.

Summary: This study collected 81 samples of black-odor waterbodies (BOWs) from rural areas in eastern China. The fluorescence index (FI) and biological index (BIX) deduced from excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) were used to analyze the composition and properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the BOWs. The results showed that the sources and humification degree of DOM varied among different latitudinal regions. The structure equation model indicated that microbial activity and pollution sources were potential factors influencing the formation and evolution of rural BOWs.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization of cellulose, hemicellulose, and protein with aqueous phase recirculation: Insight into the reaction mechanisms on hydrochar formation

Tonggui Liu et al.

Summary: Co-hydrothermal carbonization (Co-HTC) coupled with aqueous phase (AP) recirculation has been found to improve hydrochar production by promoting hydrochar formation and reducing oxygen content. The combination of Co-HTC and AP recirculation exhibited enhanced effects. The composition of hydrochar was mainly derived from oxygenated compounds in cellulose and hemicellulose, as well as nitrogen-containing compounds in protein. The major mechanisms for enhanced hydrochar formation during Co-HTC with AP recirculation were the Maillard reaction, catalytical effects from acids in the recycling AP, and the repolymerization or condensation of accumulated compounds in AP.

Contamination with multiple heavy metals decreases microbial diversity and favors generalists as the keystones in microbial occurrence networks

Qian Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of multi-metal contamination on the diversity and composition of soil microbiota using the Nemerow pollution index. The results showed that multi-metal contamination significantly altered the community composition of bacteria, fungi, and protists and reduced the alpha-diversity of these organisms. The study also revealed that generalist species played a crucial role in the microbial co-occurrence network, while specialist species were negatively correlated with the pollution index. These findings provide insights into the ecological effects of multi-metal contamination on soil microbiota and have implications for the development of bio-remediation technologies for contaminated soils.

Linkages between greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, and N2O) and dissolved organic matter composition in a shallow estuary

V Amaral et al.

Summary: The Guadalete estuary in Spain was found to be a source of CO2, CH4, and N2O to the atmosphere, with CH4 showing the strongest relationship with DOM composition. Terrestrial and microbial humic-like substances with increasing aromaticity were linked to higher pCO2 levels, while N2O was related to the protein-like fraction and humic-like material from anthropogenic activities. This indicates a possible coupling between benthic fluxes of GHGs and DOM in this estuarine system, highlighting the importance of considering DOM composition in studying GHGs distribution in estuaries for better understanding of their roles in response to climate change.
