Decomposition and measurement of the rebound effect: The case of energy efficiency improvements in Spain

Jose M. Cansino et al.

Summary: This study uses Structural Decomposition Analysis to investigate the rebound effect, finding the total rebound effect caused by energy efficiency improvements in Spain from 2000 to 2014, as well as the direct, indirect, and economy-wide rebound effects. The results show that the rebound effect varies among different sectors and economic scopes.

PRospective EnvironMental Impact asSEment (premise): A streamlined approach to producing databases for prospective life cycle assessment using integrated assessment models

R. Sacchi et al.

Summary: Prospective Life Cycle Assessment (pLCA) is a useful method to evaluate the environmental performance in the future, but it requires integrating scenarios generated by Integrated Assessment Models (IAM) to simplify the generation of inventory databases. The study shows that the chosen climate change mitigation target affects the performance of nearly all activities.

Summary: An innovative modelling framework and metrics have been developed to assess the economic and environmental performances of regional incentives in the wood energy sector. The study finds that subsidies can improve the eco-efficiency of the forest-based sector when considering potential trade-offs.

Energy efficiency and economy-wide rebound effects: A review of the evidence and its implications

Paul E. Brockway et al.

Summary: The majority of global energy scenarios anticipate a structural shift in the relationship between energy consumption and GDP, but current trends are in the opposite direction. Economy-wide rebound effects from improved energy efficiency may erode more than half of the expected energy savings, with many mechanisms driving these effects overlooked by models.

Time-varying effect of international iron ore price on China's inflation: A complete price chain with TVP-SVAR-SV model

Yufeng Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of international iron ore price shocks on China's inflation using a TVPSVAR-SV model, finding that demand shocks have a significant effect on inflation, gradually decreasing along the price chain. The research suggests that iron ore price fluctuations are driven by demand factors, and recommends policies focusing on reducing preventive demand, increasing overseas investment, and improving scrap and iron ore utilization rates to alleviate imported inflationary pressures.

Ex-ante LCA of emerging carbon steel slag treatment technologies: Fast forwarding lab observations to industrial-scale production

Matthias Buyle et al.

Summary: In this study, a ex-ante life cycle assessment was used to evaluate a novel technological pathway for extracting chromium from carbon steel slag and valorizing the residual matrix material. The research showed that using simple calculation rules in combination with basic design principles for processes at an industrial scale is more efficient than a fully-fledged process design from the start.
