Wastewater reuse: Perception and social acceptance

Daniella Costa Faria et al.

Summary: The planned reuse of treated wastewater is considered an effective approach for sustainable water resources management. However, sociocultural acceptance might hinder its success. This study investigates the perceptions and social acceptability of individuals with higher education towards treated wastewater reuse. The results reveal that the public is more receptive to indirect uses but strongly rejects direct reuse. Education level correlates with knowledge about sanitation issues but not with the acceptability of treated wastewater reuse for different purposes.

A Review on the Reliability and the Readiness Level of Microalgae-Based Nutrient Recovery Technologies for Secondary Treated Effluent in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants

Dobril Valchev et al.

Summary: Algae-based wastewater treatment technologies have great potential for economic and environmental benefits, but have not yet been successfully applied in municipal wastewater treatment plants for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. This paper reviews the literature and analyzes the reliability and readiness level of five types of reactors. The study shows that reactors with higher control over technological parameters are more reliable, but algae harvesting and additional costs are barriers to their deployment.

Techno-economic feasibility and environmental sustainability of waste-to-energy in a circular economy: Sri Lanka case study

Keshan Samarasinghe et al.

Summary: Many countries in the Asia-Pacific region have clean energy transition programs aligned with their Nationally Determined Contributions, but waste-to-energy (WtE) plays a minor role in most of them. This study explores WtE in a circular economy as a solution that can provide economic, financial, social, and environmental co-benefits through efficient resource utilization, reduced emissions, and innovation. A case study in Sri Lanka demonstrates that similar countries have the potential to implement WtE projects with circular economy elements, leading to financial and economic returns. The findings highlight the viability of a centralized incineration plant and decentralized biogas facilities in the country's Western province, producing significant power generation capacity and compost while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This pioneering case study serves as a basis for immediate action in waste management within a circular economy, supporting similar economies in achieving their net zero emission targets.

Wastewater treatment plants as a reservoir of integrase and antibiotic resistance genes - An epidemiological threat to workers and environment

Wiktor Zielinski et al.

Summary: The study reveals that conventional mechanical and biological wastewater treatment fails to completely remove pollutants, leading to the accumulation of antibiotics and heavy metals in surface water bodies, posing a threat to the environment and human health. There is also a risk of multi-drug resistant microorganisms in wastewater treatment plants, highlighting the need for stringent control measures.
