Does polycentric development produce less transportation carbon emissions? Evidence from urban form identified by night-time lights across US metropolitan areas

Meen Chel Jung et al.

Summary: Identifying the comprehensive metropolitan urban form is crucial for proposing effective policies to reduce transportation carbon emissions. This study found that an increase in the number of urban centers leads to higher carbon emissions, while a more spatially distributed urban center configuration results in lower emissions. Population and GDP per capita are positively correlated with carbon emissions. Therefore, urban planners should consider a mixed strategy combining intra-center-based smart growth principles and metropolitan-level inter-centers spatial planning to effectively address climate change.

Exploring differentiated impacts of socioeconomic factors and urban forms on city-level CO2 emissions in China: Spatial heterogeneity and varying importance levels

Zeng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of socioeconomic and urban form drivers on CO2 emissions in 275 cities in China. The results showed that socioeconomic factors had a greater impact on emissions than urban form, but the contribution from urban form was increasing.

The need for urban form data in spatial modeling of urban carbon emissions in China: A critical review

Meng Cai et al.

Summary: Cities are responsible for over 70% of global carbon emissions, making them crucial in driving climate change. In China, urban form has a significant impact on carbon emissions, yet there is a lack of urban form data and high-resolution inventories in current research, indicating the need for future spatial modeling in China to have fine spatial resolution and incorporate high-quality urban form data.

Identification of on-road vehicle CO2 emission pattern in China: A study based on a high-resolution emission inventory

Yanling Xu et al.

Summary: China, as the country with the largest anthropogenic CO2 emission, faces barriers to carbon neutrality due to CO2 emissions from on-road vehicles. A study found that in 2019, total vehicular CO2 emission was 1090 million tons, with 75% of vehicular CO2 emissions contributed by 15% of grids (hot grids).

Air quality benefits of achieving carbon neutrality in China

Xurong Shi et al.

Summary: The newly announced carbon neutrality target before 2060 in China is expected to substantially impact air quality. Simulation results show that China is likely to achieve the "Beautiful China 2035" target by 2035, with about half of the cities meeting the current WHO air quality guideline by 2060. Low-carbon policies are projected to contribute over 80% reductions in PM2.5 and O-3 concentrations by 2060.
