Going further with smaller EVs: System-level battery range, emissions and charging infrastructure analysis

Frederick Spaven et al.

Summary: Electric vehicles are necessary for achieving a zero-carbon future. However, many motorists still rely on small petrol motorcycles for transportation, for which there is no satisfactory low-carbon alternative. Additionally, the increase in electric car ownership is not effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions due to the emissions from battery production. This study proposes a new model that explores long-distance electric vehicle travel beyond battery range and introduces the concept of Day Range as a metric for EV performance. By focusing on efficiency and recharge rates in vehicle design, and developing a charging network to support lower energy use, it is possible to reduce both in-use and embodied energy, and significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions during manufacturing. This would enable a wider adoption of electric vehicles compared to the current energy-intensive battery vehicle touring paradigm.
