The Lancet Commission on the future of care and clinical research in autism

Catherine Lord et al.

Summary: Autism is a globally important condition affecting individuals and families worldwide. Although awareness has increased significantly in the past 20 years, more work is needed to improve life outcomes for individuals with autism. This requires investments in practical clinical research and the establishment of social and service systems that recognize the potential for change and growth, and address the diverse and complex needs of individuals with autism and their families.

Electroconvulsive Therapy

Randall T. Espinoza et al.

Summary: Update on Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT): ECT is effective for several disorders, notably severe or treatment-resistant depression, showing rapid response. However, stigma hampers its usage. The mechanism remains unknown, but a seizure is necessary for efficacy. ECT prominently affects memory, albeit transiently.

Globally elevated excitation-inhibition ratio in children with autism spectrum disorder and below-average intelligence

Viktoriya O. Manyukhina et al.

Summary: This study investigates the excitation-inhibition (E-I) balance in large neuronal populations in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and below-average IQ. The flattened spectral slope of aperiodic activity suggests a shift towards hyper-excitation in individuals with ASD and intellectual disability. These findings provide insight into the relationship between ASD and intellectual disability, and offer a potential biomarker for evaluating treatment effectiveness.

Summary: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID) are prevalent and heterogeneous conditions, often comorbid with psychiatric disorders. Research on electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in these patients has shown positive results, indicating the need for further investigation in this population.

Treatment Response of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Intellectually Capable Youth and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Joshua R. Smith et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis of clinical trials investigating the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in the treatment of intellectually capable persons with autism spectrum disorder (IC-ASD). The results showed that low frequency repetitive TMS to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was associated with improvement in cognitive outcomes and symptomology of IC-ASD. However, further research with neuronavigation software, theta burst protocols, targeting of various brain regions, and robust study design is needed.

Erin Henneberry et al.

Summary: Drug treatment research in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has made significant progress in recent decades, particularly in improving the ability to treat behavioral challenges. However, there are still unmet medical needs, such as the lack of approved drug therapies for the core symptoms of autism.

Catatonia in autism spectrum disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

J. Vaquerizo-Serrano et al.

Summary: Catatonic features can appear in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), affecting around 10.4% of ASD patients, commonly males. Treatment options include benzodiazepines, antipsychotics, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) with promising results in managing catatonic symptoms. Longitudinal studies are needed to further understand the relationship between catatonia and ASD.

Revisiting lorazepam challenge test: Clinical response with dose variations and utility for catatonia in a psychiatric emergency setting

Hari Hara Suchandra et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the response between two groups receiving different Lorazepam challenge test (LCT) doses in catatonia patients. Results suggest that 2 mg Lorazepam may be an optimal LCT dose, showing significant response to most catatonic signs. This offers direction for standardizing lorazepam dosing schedules for catatonia management and exploring neurobiological underpinnings for individual catatonic signs.
