Liquid-liquid equilibrium experiment and mechanism analysis of menthol-based deep eutectic solvents extraction for separation of fuel additive tert-butanol

Zihao Su et al.

Summary: This study synthesized deep eutectic solvents (DESs) using menthol as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and different carbon chain carboxylic acids as hydrogen bond donors (HBD). The liquid equilibrium (LLE) experiment was conducted to determine the distribution coefficient (beta) and selectivity (S) at standard atmospheric pressure and temperature. The impact of DESs on separation efficiency was discussed by changing the proportion. The NRTL model was used to correlate the experimental data, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was used to investigate the extraction process.

Natural green deep eutectic solvents-based eco-friendly and efficient extraction of flavonoids from Selaginella moellendorffii: Process optimization, composition identification and biological activity

Jie Lei et al.

Summary: In this study, ultrasound-assisted natural deep eutectic solvents (DES) were used to efficiently and eco-friendly extract total flavonoids (TF) from Selaginella moellendorffii. The optimal DES was choline chloride-lactic acid (ChCl-Lac). Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to obtain the highest TF content, resulting in an TF content of 5.72 +/- 0.13 mg/g. DESUAE not only saved time but also increased TF content by nearly 2-3 times compared to other extraction methods. Furthermore, the TF extract exhibited potent antioxidant activities and antimicrobial activity against six bacteria, as well as inhibition effects on the growth rate of cancer cells.

The application of green solvent in a biorefinery using lignocellulosic biomass as a feedstock

Eng Kein New et al.

Summary: The high dependence on crude oil has led to a need for alternative sustainable resources. Traditional solvents often come with drawbacks such as high cost, environmental concerns, and complex separation systems. Therefore, the scientific community has been actively researching more cost-effective and environmentally friendly 'green' solvents. However, these solvents also have disadvantages, such as complicated product recovery, recyclability, and high operational costs. This review evaluates the potential advantages, challenges, and drawbacks of various green solvents in transforming lignocellulosic biomass into high-value products, and discusses research opportunities for future developments and potential upscale implementation.

Liquid-liquid extraction and mechanism analysis of extracting fuel additive isopropanol from mixture with choline-based deep eutectic solvents as efficient extractants

Xingyi Liu et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have promising applications in azeotropic separation. In this study, three choline-based DESs were synthesized to extract isopropanol (IPA) from n-heptane. Liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were conducted to investigate the extraction mechanism. The results showed that DESs synthesized from choline chloride and ethylene glycol exhibited the best extraction efficiency of IPA. The chloride ion played a crucial role in the LLE process.
