Environmental microplastics and their additives-a critical review on advanced oxidative techniques for their removal

Kingsley John et al.

Summary: Microplastics and their additives are a major concern for their toxicity to the environment and public health. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been proven to be more effective in removing microplastics and their additives compared to traditional methods, although there is limited research on their application. This review investigates the degradation of common microplastics and additives using different AOPs and identifies reactive oxygen species as a key driver for AOPs' efficiency. The complete removal of environmental microplastics and their additives shows promising results with AOPs.

Biomass-Tuned Reduced Graphene Oxide@Zn/Cu: Benign Materials for the Cleanup of Selected Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs in Water

Ajibola A. Bayode et al.

Summary: The persistent increase in the amount of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (IBP) and diclofenac (DCF) in water bodies is alarming, calling for immediate action. A bimetallic plantain-based adsorbent (CZPP) and its modified form (CZPPrgo) were synthesized and found to be effective in removing IBP and DCF from water. The adsorption process was optimized by varying the initial concentration of pollutants, adsorbent dose, and pH. CZPPrgo showed the highest adsorption capacities, and the removal of IBP and DCF followed the pseudo-second order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm model. The reuse efficiency of CZPPrgo was above 80% even after four adsorption cycles, making it a promising adsorbent for water treatment.

Magnesium modified activated carbons derived from coconut shells for the removal of fluoride from water

Athanasia K. Tolkou et al.

Summary: The presence of fluoride in water is a major global water problem that requires effective technologies for its removal. This study focuses on the development of novel adsorbents for fluoride removal, such as magnesium or/and lanthanum-modified activated carbon and silica. The adsorbent materials were studied in terms of their structure and morphology, and tested for the treatment of fluoride-containing waters. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was achieved at pH 8, after 4 hours of reaction, and with a dose of 0.2 g/L of adsorbent. Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second order kinetic model fitted the experimental data well.

Formation of improved activated carbons from sugarcane bagasse as environmental materials for adsorption of phenolic pollutants

K. M. S. Khalil et al.

Summary: Phenolic pollutants are highly toxic and their removal from aquatic resources is crucial. Activated carbon (AC) adsorption is the best method for removing phenols from solutions, but the high cost and difficulty in regeneration have led to a demand for low-cost AC materials. Sugarcane bagasse-derived activated carbon (BAC) was successfully prepared with high specific surface area, improved pore structure, and nanostructured graphitic-like composition. The BAC materials showed enhanced adsorption capacities for phenol and other substituted phenols and demonstrated potential as environmentally sustainable adsorbents for phenolic pollutants.
