Hidden vibronic and excitonic structure and vibronic coherence transfer in the bacterial reaction center

Veronica R. Policht et al.

Summary: This article reports two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy experiments on the bacterial reaction center, revealing hidden vibrational and excitonic structures. By analyzing the coherent dynamics of the reaction center, multiple quasi-resonances between pigment vibrations and excitonic energy gaps are identified, as well as vibronic coherence transfer processes that are often neglected in standard models. These findings provide insights into the energy transfer and charge separation processes in photosynthesis.

Quasiparticle Self-Consistent GW-Bethe-Salpeter Equation Calculations for Large Chromophoric Systems

Arno Foerster et al.

Summary: The study introduces a self-consistent and starting-point-independent qsGW-BSE method for calculations on large molecules, demonstrating its excellent agreement with experimental results for vertical excitation energies of chlorophyll monomers and dimers. Calculations on photosystem II reaction centers using this method show low-energy spectra with local character states.

First principles theoretical spectroscopy of methylene blue: Between limitations of time-dependent density functional theory approximations and its realistic description in the solvent

Thiago B. de Queiroz et al.

Summary: In this study, a non-empirical optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functional was used with TDDFT to investigate the optical excitations of gas phase and solvated methylene blue. By considering explicit solute polarization and solvent-solute intermolecular interactions, the optical gap of methylene blue was successfully described, with the results validated against first-principles calculations and experimental data. This methodology is expected to perform well in describing solvated spectra of pi-conjugated systems.

How Can We Predict Accurate Electrochromic Shifts for Biochromophores? A Case Study on the Photosynthetic Reaction Center

Abhishek Sirohiwal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrochromic shifts of RC chromophores in photosystem II using large-scale quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations. It shows that certain range-separated density functionals are able to accurately reproduce the shifts in RC site energy, while other methods like the CAM-B3LYP functional underestimate the shifts.

Nature of Asymmetric Electron Transfer in the Symmetric Pathways of Photosystem I

Koji Mitsuhashi et al.

Summary: This study reports the origin of A-branch electron transfer in Photosystem I, focusing on the electronic coupling between pigments and the electrostatic interaction with protein environments. The asymmetry of electron-transfer activity is found to originate from P-A as a chlorophyll epimer.

Investigating Primary Charge Separation in the Reaction Center of Heliobacterium modesticaldum

Moritz Brutting et al.

Summary: In this study, the primary charge separation step in the homodimeric reaction center of Heliobacterium modesticaldum was calculated from first principles. The results showed a certain spectral overlap between the forward-charge transfer and the coupled Q(x) excitations, indicating a complex mechanism for charge transfer in the system. The influence of thermal vibrations on the excited states were also revealed through ab initio Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations, demonstrating the reliability and robustness of the findings.

Band gaps of crystalline solids from Wannier-localization-based optimal tuning of a screened range-separated hybrid functional

Dahvyd Wing et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple and inexpensive method to accurately predict fundamental band gaps of crystalline solid-state systems. The method, based on nonempirical optimal tuning of a screened range-separated hybrid functional, has been benchmarked against experiment and found to yield quantitative accuracy across a range of systems.
