High Nickel and No Cobalt-The Pursuit of Next-Generation Layered Oxide Cathodes

Lei Yu et al.

Summary: The prosperity of the electric vehicle industry is driving the research and development of lithium-ion batteries. The search for next-generation cathode materials has shifted to high-nickel and cobalt-free cathodes. Efforts have been made to eliminate cobalt and achieve higher nickel content in layered cathode materials. Further development of layered cathode materials and other promising candidates is likely to spur the development of high-performance and low-cost Li-ion batteries.

Recent Advances in LiFePO4 Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries. First-Principles Research

Qun-fang Zhao et al.

Summary: Lithium-ion batteries, known for their high energy density and excellent cycling performance, are the dominant battery technology used in portable electronics and electric vehicles. LiFePO4 cathodes, with good cycling stability, low cost, and excellent safety, are considered one of the most attractive cathode materials for LIBs. However, challenges such as poor ionic and electronic conductivity, as well as slow Li+ diffusion, hinder their high-rate application. Research has been conducted to enhance the electrochemical performance of LiFePO4, with a focus on understanding and improving its electronic structure and ionic dynamic properties through computational studies. Recent achievements in first-principles studies of LiFePO4 cathode materials have been discussed, including their structure, electronic properties, Li-ion transport characteristics, mechanical stability, and thermodynamic properties.
