Accurate Polarization-Resolved Absorption Spectra of OrganicSemiconductor Thin Films Using First-Principles Quantum-ChemicalMethods: Pentacene as a Case Study

Luca Craciunescu et al.

Summary: Theoretical studies using clusters as model systems have been successful in explaining photophysical phenomena in organic semiconductor thin films, but have not been able to accurately simulate absorption spectra. This work demonstrates the accurate prediction of spectra using time-dependent density functional theory and optimal tuned functionals when the employed cluster reflects the symmetry of the crystal structure. For pentacene thin films, the computed electronic spectra show an impressive accuracy compared to experimental data, allowing for accurate peak assignments and mechanistic studies.

The Original Design Principles of the Y-Series Nonfullerene Acceptors, from Y1 to Y6

Yang Yang

Summary: The power conversion efficiencies of organic photovoltaics have significantly increased since 2019, thanks to the newly invented Y-series nonfullerene acceptors (Y-NFAs). However, the comprehensive insights into the design principles behind these molecules are still not fully elucidated in the literature. The Perspective shares original insights into the understanding, prediction, and design principles of Y1 to Y6, along with a brief history behind the discoveries of the Y-NFAs.

Virtual Screening of TADF Emitters for Single-Layer OLEDs

Kun-Han Lin et al.

Summary: Thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a concept that boosts the efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes by harvesting triplet excitations. TADF materials with balanced electron and hole transport simplify manufacturing processes and improve stability of single-layer organic light emitting diodes.

Glass transition temperature prediction of disordered molecular solids

Kun-Han Lin et al.

Summary: The glass transition temperature, T-g, is crucial for evaluating the morphological stability and molecular ordering of organic semiconductor films. Despite the challenges in predicting T-g accurately from chemical structure, a combination of fitting protocol and automated workflow has enabled the reliable prediction of T-g with a mean absolute error of around 20 degrees C for a range of organic compounds. This study establishes a dependable and automated prescreening procedure for designing amorphous organic semiconductors, essential for the optimization and development of organic light-emitting diodes.
