Laser Probing of the Rotational Cooling of Molecular Ions by Electron Collisions

Abel Kalosi et al.

Summary: In this study, state-selected measurements of rotational cooling and excitation rates of CHthorn molecular ions by inelastic electron collisions are presented. The experiments were conducted at a cryogenic storage ring using a monoenergetic electron beam at matched velocity, combined with state-sensitive laser dissociation of the CHthorn ions for simultaneous monitoring of the rotational level populations. The results provide important experimental data for benchmarking theoretical calculations and probing inelastic electron collisions for various molecular ions in plasma environments.

Experimental Determination of the Dissociative Recombination Rate Coefficient for Rotationally Cold CH+ and Its Implications for Diffuse Cloud Chemistry

Daniel Paul et al.

Summary: Observations of CH+ are crucial for understanding the physical properties of diffuse clouds, and this study significantly improves the accuracy and applicability of the CH+ dissociative recombination rate coefficient. Our findings show that DR can be an important destruction mechanism in quiescent gas and remain significant up to temperatures of approximately 600 K with an increase in electron fraction. This new data will enhance the reliability of future studies on diffuse cloud properties through CH+ abundance observations.
