Exploring Chemistry Professors' Methods of Highlighting the Relevancy of Chemistry: Opportunities, Obstacles, and Suggestions to Improve Students' Motivation in Science Classrooms

Summary: This study investigated the efforts made by undergraduate chemistry professors in North America to increase student motivation and interest in the subject, as well as the feasibility of connecting students to real-world applications and societal issues related to chemistry. The survey distributed to chemistry instructors at post-secondary institutions in the US and Canada revealed a correlation between the usage of real-world applications and socio-scientific issues in chemistry courses and instructors' values, comfort level, and preferred approaches in teaching.

Cloth Face Masks Containing Silver: Evaluating the Status

Summary: During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, demand for cloth face masks containing nanosilver has increased. While silver has long been known to be antibacterial and have additional antiviral properties, it is essential to note that filtration capabilities are crucial in preventing virus transmission. This study evaluated 40 masks claiming to contain silver for substantiated antiviral and antimicrobial claims, with 21 masks found to have substantiated claims. However, certification or patents alone are not enough to determine credibility, and stricter regulations by federal agencies on product testing for manufacturers making claims are necessary.
