Exogenous methyl jasmonate induced cassava defense response and enhanced resistance to Tetranychus urticae

Summary: The exogenous application of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) can induce defense responses in cassava against the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM). This study found that MeJA treatment reduced TSSM egg production and adult longevity, slowed development, and prolonged the egg stage. TSSM-resistant cassava variety C1115 exhibited stronger inhibition of TSSM development and reproduction compared to the TSSM-susceptible variety KU50.

Summary: Domestication of crop plants affects the chemical traits, such as volatile production, of the plants, which in turn impact parasitoid foraging success, development, and survival. The balance between nutrient content and chemical defense in cultivated plants can influence the suitability of hosts for parasitoids, as well as their immune response. Overall, plant domestication significantly alters the relationship between plants and parasitoids due to changes in plant morphology, physical characteristics, chemical defenses, and new plant associations. Research on the effects of plant domestication on host-parasitoid interactions is important for effective insect pest control.

Phytochemical diversity, an important component of biodiversity, has been studied in natural ecosystems, but its role in agroecosystems is still unclear. Phytochemical diversity affects plant consumers and is influenced by evolutionary and coevolutionary processes. However, the patterns and processes of phytochemical diversity vary depending on species and environmental factors, making direct application to industrial agroecosystems challenging. Nevertheless, recommendations are made for the potential use of phytochemical diversity in agroecosystem management.

Intraspecific plant variation and nonhost herbivores affect parasitoid host location behaviour

Summary: This study investigated the impact of plant volatile variation induced by different herbivores on parasitoid foraging behavior. The results showed that the foraging decisions of the parasitoid were influenced by the apparentness of volatile cues from upwind host-infested plants, and the parasitoid was more likely to locate host herbivores on plant genotypes with more apparent volatile information.

Insect egg-killing: a new front on the evolutionary arms-race between brassicaceous plants and pierid butterflies

These Brassicaceae plants effectively kill eggs by inducing HR-like necrosis, leading to a new defense mechanism in the evolutionary arms-race between plants and insects, beyond the well-studied plant toxins.
