Neuroprotective effect of the standardised extract of Bacopa monnieri (BacoMind) in valproic acid model of autism spectrum disorder in rats

Mishra Abhishek et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the neuroprotective effect and mechanism of action of Bacopa monnieri in a rat model of autism spectrum disorder. The results showed that Bacopa monnieri improved abnormal behavior and had antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, possibly through modulating the expression of AMPA receptors.

Sirt2 promotes white matter oligodendrogenesis during development and in models of neonatal hypoxia

Beata Jablonska et al.

Summary: The study identifies Sirt2 as a crucial regulator of oligodendrocyte differentiation and shows that hypoxia reduces Sirt2 expression, leading to delayed oligodendrocyte maturation and hypomyelination. The findings suggest that a balance of Sirt1 and Sirt2 activity is necessary for developmental oligodendrogenesis, and that targeting these proteins may promote repair following white matter injury.

Hippocampal contributions to social and cognitive deficits in autism spectrum disorder

Sarah M. Banker et al.

Summary: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social functioning as well as commonly impaired nonsocial cognition such as hippocampus-dependent spatial reasoning and episodic memory. The symptoms of ASD typically emerge between 12 and 24 months of age, a critical developmental period for the hippocampus. Despite evidence of hippocampal structural abnormalities in individuals with ASD, there has been relatively little focus on hippocampal function in human studies. This review highlights the hippocampus as a promising area of interest for future research in ASD.

Age at autism spectrum disorder diagnosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis from 2012 to 2019

Maarten van't Hof et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on studies published between 2012 and 2019 to determine the current average age at diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder globally. The findings showed the average age at diagnosis to be 60.48 months, with a lower average age of 43.18 months for children aged 10 or below. Various factors that may influence the age at diagnosis were reported by studies, often with conflicting or inconclusive results.
