Stimulating the Pre-Catalyst Redox Reaction and the Proton-Electron Transfer Process of Cobalt Phthalocyanine for CO2 Electroreduction

Hengyu Li et al.

Summary: This study utilizes density functional theory calculations to identify the mechanisms of two important steps in CO2RR catalyzed by cobalt phthalocyanine in aqueous electrolytes. The results reveal the potential-dependent reaction kinetics of CO2RR and provide a guideline for molecular engineering of CoPc-based catalysts.

Ab Initio Investigation of Covalently Immobilized Cobalt-Centered Metal-Organic Catalysts for CO2 Reduction: The Effect of the Substrate on the Reaction Energetics

Oliver J. Conquest et al.

Summary: Recent experimental studies have shown that covalently immobilized CO2 reduction organometallic catalysts exhibit remarkable activity, but the underlying mechanisms for this are not yet understood. In this study, ab initio calculations are performed to investigate the effect of covalent immobilization and substrate geometry on the reaction pathways of these catalysts. The results suggest that covalently immobilized catalysts show improved performance compared to their homogeneous analogues, and specific defect sites on graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes are found to be strong anchoring sites. The calculated reaction pathways are in consistent agreement with available experimental results, providing a detailed understanding of the covalent immobilization and function of these catalysts.

Calculating Entropies of Large Molecules in Aqueous Phase

Oliver J. Conquest et al.

Summary: In this study, entropy benchmarking of molecules in aqueous phase using different solvation models was conducted to improve accuracy. The comparison of solvation entropy models for a set of 56 molecules highlighted the importance of accurately describing cavitation entropy for large-sized solute molecules. Finally, comparing reaction free energies with entropies calculated using the most accurate solvation model demonstrated a significant improvement in accuracy relative to experimental values.

Ab Initio Study of the C-O Bond Dissociation in CO2 Reduction by Redox and Carboxyl Routes on 3d Transition Metal Systems

Vivianne K. Ocampo-Restrepo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the C-O bond dissociation of the CO2 molecule on transition metal clusters using density functional theory calculations, revealing that the redox route has lower activation energies compared to the carboxyl route. The adsorption energies of CO2 and trans-COOH species were found to be the best descriptors for the dissociation process. The d-state occupation and adsorption behavior of CO2 and O on the clusters played significant roles in determining the activation barriers for C-O bond dissociation.

Aggregation and Significant Difference in Reactivity Therein: Blocking the CO2-to-CH3OH Reaction

Xiaoyu Chen et al.

Summary: The recent study on a CoPc/CNT system shows that methanol selectivity is higher when CoPc exists mainly as a monomer compared to when it is in dimeric form, favoring CO dissociation. The mechanism involves rate-limiting CO2 association and the C-O cleavage step with similar activation free energy. Additionally, different forms of CoPc exhibit distinct reaction pathways under varying reduction potentials.
