Prognostic impact of variant histologies in urothelial bladder cancer treated with radical cystectomy

Francesco Claps et al.

Summary: The study aims to evaluate variant histologies (VHs) for disease-specific survival (DSS) in patients with invasive urothelial bladder cancer (BCa) undergoing radical cystectomy (RC). The results showed that compared to pure urothelial carcinoma, clear-cell, plasmacytoid, small-cell, and sarcomatoid VHs were associated with worse DSS, while lymphoepithelioma-like VH showed a DSS benefit. Accurate pathological diagnosis can ensure tailored counselling for patients who require more intensive management.

Using machine learning to predict lymph node metastasis in patients with renal cell carcinoma: A population-based study

Yuhan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a machine learning model to predict the risk of lymph node metastasis in patients with renal cell carcinoma. By integrating big data analytics and machine learning algorithms, an online risk calculator was established. The results showed that the model performed well in both internal and external trials, providing accurate assessment of lymph node metastasis risk for individualized treatment and surgical decision-making.

Prognosis of Primary Papillary Ta Grade 3 Bladder Cancer in the Non-muscle-invasive Spectrum

Irene J. Beijert et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prognostic value of categorizing Ta G3 compared to Ta G2 and T1 G3 bladder cancer. The results showed that the time to progression for Ta G3 cancer is between that of Ta G2 and T1 G3 tumors, while patients with Ta G3 NMIBC with concomitant carcinoma in situ (CIS) have a worse prognosis similar to that of T1 G3 with CIS. These findings support the recent changes in the European Association of Urology guidelines for more refined risk stratification of Ta G3 tumors, as many Ta G3 patients have a better prognosis than previously thought.

Development and External Validation of a Machine Learning Model for Prediction of Lymph Node Metastasis in Patients with Prostate Cancer

Ali Sabbagh et al.

Summary: Machine learning can be used to predict the risk of lymph node involvement in prostate cancer patients with higher accuracy than traditional tools. This helps in performing lymph node dissection surgery only in patients who need it and avoiding side effects in those who do not.

A panel of systemic inflammatory response biomarkers for outcome prediction in patients treated with radical cystectomy for urothelial carcinoma

Victor M. Schuettfort et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the predictive and prognostic value of a panel of systemic inflammatory response biomarkers in bladder cancer patients undergoing radical cystectomy. While these biomarkers showed some discriminative power, their addition to the models did not significantly improve risk stratification beyond established clinicopathological variables. Further research on novel biomarkers is needed for improved risk assessment.

T1 bladder carcinoma with variant histology: pathological features and clinical significance

Antonio Lopez-Beltran et al.

Summary: This study aimed to categorize high-grade T1 bladder urothelial carcinoma into risk groups based on variant histology. The presence of variant histology was identified as a significant predictor of disease-free survival and cancer-specific survival in HGT1 bladder cancer. The study implies that treating micropapillary HGT1 urothelial carcinoma as a high-risk cancer is supported, and nested, glandular, and basaloid should also be considered high-risk due to their aggressive behavior and limited response to certain therapies.

European Association of Urology Guidelines on Non-muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer (Ta, T1, and Carcinoma in Situ)

Marko Babjuk et al.

Summary: The updated EAU guidelines provide new information on the diagnosis and treatment of NMIBC for clinical practice. Individual risk assessment is crucial in determining the appropriate treatment for patients with different risk levels. Surgical intervention, including radical cystectomy, may be necessary for cases unresponsive to BCG treatment or with high risk of progression.

Summary: The study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of conventional cross-sectional imaging in detecting preoperative LN involvement among BCa patients, and found a slight concordance between clinical and pathological LN status. Location-based sub-analyses showed unsatisfactory results in each LN location.

A Novel Nomogram for Prediction and Evaluation of Lymphatic Metastasis in Patients With Renal Cell Carcinoma

Wenle Li et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify predictors of lymphatic metastases in renal cell carcinoma patients and develop a new nomogram to assess the risk. The nomogram demonstrated excellent discrimination power and stability in both the training and validation groups, providing a useful tool for clinicians to quantify the risk of lymphatic metastases in RCC patients.

The comprehensive complication index is associated with a significant increase in complication severity between 30 and 90 days after radical cystectomy for bladder cancer

Maximilian Haas et al.

Summary: The true cumulative morbidity after radical cystectomy (RC) seems to be higher than previously reported with Clavien-Dindo Classification (CDC), especially over a 90-day period. Body Mass Index (BMI), various comorbidity indices, and incontinent urinary diversions are independent risk factors for suffering a severe complication after RC.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Prognostic value of preoperative albumin-to-fibrinogen ratio (AFR) in patients with bladder cancer treated with radical cystectomy

Francesco Claps et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the prognostic role of albumin-to-fibrinogen ratio (AFR) in bladder cancer patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC), with preoperative low AFR independently associated with worse outcomes. These results suggest that patients with low AFR may benefit from neoadjuvant treatment.
