Finite element derived femoral strength is a better predictor of hip fracture risk than aBMD in the AGES Reykjavik study cohort

Ingmar Fleps et al.

Summary: This study compared finite element derived femoral strength to areal bone mineral density as a metric for hip fracture risk assessment and found the former to be significantly better. Non-linear material models in finite element models performed better at classifying hip fractures, and loading alignments with low internal rotation and adduction were found to be most suitable for hip fracture classification.

Opportunistic CT screening predicts individuals at risk of major osteoporotic fracture

A. S. Michalski et al.

Summary: Opportunistic CT screening using abdominal CT scans is effective in predicting individuals with previous fracture at major osteoporotic sites. Combining bone mineral density and finite element-estimated bone strength provides the best prediction for low-energy fractures in women.

Femoral strength and strains in sideways fall: Validation of finite element models against bilateral strain measurements

Joeri Kok et al.

Summary: Sideways falls in the elderly often lead to hip fractures, and FE models of the proximal femur can help assess high-risk patients. This study successfully validated an FE model using strain measurements and peak forces from experimental data, paving the way for further validation of FE models under sideways fall loading conditions.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility of using CTFEA to assess hip fracture risk in T2DM patients. The Hip Strength Score (HSS) was significantly lower in patients who had sustained a hip fracture, indicating its potential as a novel measure of bone strength for risk assessment.

Summary: Osteoporosis weakens bones and makes them more prone to fractures, with vertebral fractures being difficult to diagnose. Routine CT scans can be used to improve the accuracy of diagnosing osteoporosis and fractures.
