Structure-based identification of potential SARS-CoV-2 main protease inhibitors

Shama Khan et al.

Summary: To address the lack of effective drugs or vaccines for COVID-19, researchers used molecular modeling methods to discover potential inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 M-pro enzyme. Through simulation studies, they identified five potential inhibitors, one of which showed high affinity and stability in binding to the M-pro. These compounds could be promising candidates for COVID-19 therapy, but further experimental and clinical validation is needed.

Antibiotic resistance in hospital-acquired ESKAPE-E infections in low- and lower-middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Olaniyi Ayobami et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are global health challenges. This study summarizes recent data on antibiotic resistance in priority HAIs (ESKAPE-E) in low- and lower-middle-income countries (L-LMICs) and compares them with data from high-income countries (HICs). The results show that antibiotic resistance is higher in L-LMICs compared to HICs.

Potential therapeutic targets of Klebsiella pneumoniae: a multi-omics review perspective

Sabeeha Ali et al.

Summary: The prolonged use of antibiotics has led to the development of multidrug resistance in many organisms, causing a global health crisis. Klebsiella pneumoniae is a causative organism for various infections and recently, both immunocompromised and healthy individuals are equally susceptible to K. pneumoniae infections due to the emergence of hypervirulent strains. This review discusses the pathophysiology of K. pneumoniae, including its virulence determinants, and explores potential drug targets for the discovery of novel drugs and effective treatment regimens.

Antimicrobial Resistance Rates and Surveillance in Sub-Saharan Africa: Where Are We Now?

Samuel Kariuki et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance in sub-Saharan Africa is high, mainly due to poverty, resulting in a high burden of infectious diseases, poor regulation of antimicrobial use, and lack of effective alternatives. While most countries have adopted the global action plan to tackle antimicrobial resistance, fewer countries are able to fully implement country-specific action plans due to various challenges.

Hypervirulence and Multiresistance to Antibiotics in Klebsiella pneumoniae Strains Isolated from Patients with Hospital- and Community-Acquired Infections in a Mexican Medical Center

Areli Bautista-Ceron et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association profiles of virulence genes, capsular serotypes, biofilm formation, and multidrug resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae strains from hospital- and community-acquired infections. The results showed a wide diversity of virulence gene profiles and serotypes, providing important insights for further research on K. pneumoniae infections.

UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.
