Age-related changes in protective arm reaction kinematics, kinetics, and neuromuscular activation during evoked forward falls

James Borrelli et al.

Summary: This study found that older adults exhibited a smaller maximum vertical ground reaction force and less elbow extension at impact during falls, potentially increasing the risk of increased body impact.

Age-related increases in reaction time result from slower preparation, not delayed initiation

Robert M. Hardwick et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that healthy younger adults can prepare accurate responses faster than their voluntary reaction times, but a seemingly unnecessary delay occurs before responding. This study examined the effects of aging on movement preparation, movement initiation, and the delay between them. The results indicate that with age, both movement initiation in voluntary reaction time and movement preparation in forced reaction time take longer. However, the time required to prepare accurate movements is shorter than the self-selected initiation times, and the delay between movement preparation and initiation remains consistent across the lifespan.

Differences in fall-related emergency departments visits with and without an Injury, 2018

Briana L. Moreland et al.

Summary: Falls have a significant impact on the health of older adults, with the majority of fall-related emergency department visits resulting in injuries. Females and older adults in rural areas have a higher percentage of fall-related injuries. Emergency department visits without a coded injury are more likely to result in hospitalization compared to visits with a coded injury.

Can we use peripheral vision to create a visuospatial map for compensatory reach-to-grasp reactions?

Laura Williams et al.

Summary: Perturbation-induced reach-to-grasp reactions depend on vision to capture environmental features, and previous research has proposed the use of an intrinsic visuospatial map to reduce motor response delays. This study aimed to determine if compensatory reach-to-grasp reactions could be successfully executed while relying on a visuospatial map acquired using peripheral vision. The findings suggest that peripheral vision contributes to spatially locating targets and controlling rapid compensatory reach-to-grasp reactions.

Test-retest reliability of the FALL FIT system for assessing and training protective arm reactions in response to a forward fall

James Borrelli et al.

Summary: The use of hands and arms in fall prevention is essential. This study assessed the test-retest reliability of fall dynamics and protective arm response using the FALL FIT simulator, and found good to excellent reliability for most measures. FALL FIT can simulate various fall dynamics and is important for understanding protective arm reactions.

Does functional performance and upper body strength predict upper extremity reaction and movement time in older women?

Hayley S. Legg et al.

Summary: The study revealed a relationship between upper body strength and faster reaction and movement time, with an increase in strength potentially leading to quicker responses. This suggests a potential avenue for future interventions that could impact forward fall landing and reduce injury risk.
