Faster triceps surae muscle cyclic contractions alter muscle activity and whole body metabolic rate

Wannes Swinnen et al.

Summary: A century ago, Fenn found that faster muscle contractions lead to more energy liberation. However, the evidence for isometric muscle contractions being energetically cheaper than concentric contractions is mainly based on single fiber or isolated muscle studies. This study aimed to investigate whether this holds true for whole body metabolic rate by changing the contraction velocity of ankle plantar flexors.

The non-intuitive, in-vivo behavior of aponeuroses in a unipennate muscle

Fransiska M. Bossuyt et al.

Summary: Experimental observations and theoretical models suggest that the loading of muscular aponeuroses is complex and not reconcilable with the frequently assumed mechanical in series arrangement. This study measured in-vivo longitudinal strains of aponeuroses and force of a specific muscle during locomotor activities in female sheep. The results showed a complex interaction between aponeurosis strains and muscle forces, suggesting that the mechanical in series arrangement is not accurate in determining the mechanical energy storage and release in muscles.

Muscle preactivation and the limits of muscle power output during jumping in the Cuban tree frog Osteopilus septentrionalis

Richard L. Marsh

Summary: Previous studies found that the power output of jumping in frogs exceeds what is possible from muscle power alone, suggesting that jumping requires the storage and release of elastic strain energy. This study on Cuban tree frogs observed that muscle mass-specific work output and power output during jumping increased linearly with the work done, but the muscles were activated before the jump started. The preactivation duration and EMG amplitude also increased with increasing amounts of work performed.

Summary: The study found that participants with higher hop heights significantly outperformed those with lower hop heights in all hopping tasks. Additionally, the group with higher hop heights had significantly higher concentric ankle work in all hopping tasks compared to the lower hop height group. Active muscle work was also significantly higher in the higher hop height group compared to the lower hop height group across all hopping tasks.

Enthalpy efficiency of the soleus muscle contributes to improvements in running economy

Sebastian Bohm et al.

Summary: The study explored the behavior of the soleus muscle during running and found that improvements in energy cost following increases in plantar flexor strength and Achilles tendon stiffness may be attributed to increased enthalpy efficiency of the operating soleus muscle. The results further suggest that the energy production of the soleus muscle during the lengthening phase of the muscle-tendon unit may play a crucial role in the overall metabolic energy cost of running.

Series elasticity facilitates safe plantar flexor muscle-tendon shock absorption during perturbed human hopping

Taylor J. M. Dick et al.

Summary: This study investigates how humans modulate neuromuscular control and plantar flexor muscle-tendon unit (MTU) dynamics to maintain stability during unexpected vertical perturbations. The results show that unexpected drop in ground height causes an automatic phase shift in plantar flexor muscle activity timing, initiating a cascade of responses including increased MTU and fascicle length changes and increased muscle forces. Co-activation of plantar- and dorsiflexors prior to ground contact improves the capacity of plantar flexors to rapidly absorb energy and may aid in avoiding muscle strains.

Effects of plyometric training on muscle-tendon mechanical properties and behavior of fascicles during jumping

Keitaro Kubo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of plyometric training on muscle-tendon mechanical properties and fascicle behavior during jumping to understand the mechanisms of improved jump performance. Results showed that after training, active muscle stiffness and tendon elongation increased significantly, while tendon hysteresis decreased. Jump heights and muscle activation strategy improved after training, indicating changes in muscle-tendon properties.

Plasticity of the gastrocnemius elastic system in response to decreased work and power demand during growth

Suzanne M. Cox et al.

Summary: The study investigated whether altering work and power generation during maturation affects the morphology of the elastic system in guinea fowl. The results showed that changes in jump power and work did not significantly impact the components of the elastic system, with energy storage capacity being most sensitive to muscle properties. This suggests that the gastrocnemius elastic system in guinea fowl does not exhibit plastic response to decreased demand during growth, with neural plasticity possibly explaining performance variation.

Muscle-specific economy of force generation and efficiency of work production during human running

Sebastian Bohm et al.

Summary: The study found that the soleus and vastus lateralis muscles operate under different conditions during running, with the soleus continuously shortening as a work generator and the vastus lateralis contracting near optimal length for force generation. The favorable operating conditions of both muscles are attributed to the effective length and velocity-decoupling of fascicles and muscle-tendon unit.

Muscle and tendon adaptations to moderate load eccentric vs. concentric resistance exercise in young and older males

Jonathan Iain Quinlan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish the time course of muscle and tendon adaptations to submaximal concentric and eccentric resistance exercise training (RET). It was found that older males showed a dampened rate of adaptation with age in tendon Young's modulus, while both types of contractions resulted in similar overall changes in tendon Young's modulus. Muscle hypertrophy and strength increases were similar between concentric and eccentric contractions, but there were differences in pennation angle increases (greater in concentric) and fascicle length changes (greater in eccentric). Notably, muscle and tendon adaptations appeared to occur in synergy to maintain the efficacy of the muscle-tendon unit.
