Sex differences in motor unit behaviour: A review

Tea Lulic-Kuryllo et al.

Summary: The lack of systematic investigations on sex-related differences in motor unit behaviour presents a challenge in understanding and optimizing health and performance in males and females. Limited studies have revealed potential sex differences in motor unit behaviour in human muscles. This review highlights the under-representation of female participants in motor unit studies and the limited number of studies investigating sex differences in motor unit behaviour. More data collection on females and research on sex differences in motor unit behaviour is urgently needed to develop sex-specific approaches for improving neuromuscular performance and rehabilitation.

Sex differences in the modulation of the motor unit discharge rate leads to reduced force steadiness

J. Greig Inglis et al.

Summary: This study found that females exhibit lower force steadiness and higher coefficient of variation of motor unit action potential inter-pulse interval compared to males at submaximal and maximal force outputs. This may be due to differences in motor unit behaviors leading to the observed differences in force steadiness between the sexes.
