The lateral posterior clock neurons of Drosophila melanogaster express three neuropeptides and have multiple connections within the circadian clock network and beyond

Nils Reinhard et al.

Summary: In this study, using a highly specific split-Gal4 line, the researchers characterize Drosophila's lateral posterior neurons (LPNs) and propose their putative role in controlling daily activity and sleep patterns. They find that LPNs are heterogeneous, with two types of neurons promoting sleep and possibly wakefulness, respectively. LPNs exhibit manifold connections with other circadian clock neurons and rhythmically express neuropeptides that may contribute to the modulation of metabolism, feeding, and reproduction.

Dorsal clock networks drive temperature preference rhythms in Drosophila

Shyh-Chi Chen et al.

Summary: This study reveals the crucial roles of dorsal neurons 2 (DN2s) in temperature preference rhythm (TPR) regulation in Drosophila. DN2s control temperature preference by regulating contacts with posterior DN1 neurons (DN1ps). Additionally, anterior DN1 neurons (DN1as) are identified as important regulators of TPR.

The Neuronal Circuit of the Dorsal Circadian Clock Neurons in Drosophila melanogaster

Nils Reinhard et al.

Summary: Drosophila's dorsal clock neurons (DNs) play an important role in regulating activity and connecting with downstream neurons in the fly's circadian system. Recent research has revealed the heterogeneity of these neurons, with some being strongly connected with lateral clock neurons (LNs) and others serving as output neurons. Additionally, two putative communication centers, located in the superior lateral protocerebrum and the posterior lateral protocerebrum, have been identified as potential key players in the clock network.

The Regulation of Drosophila Sleep

Orie T. Shafer et al.

Summary: Sleep is crucial for brain function across different animal species, and genetic studies in fruit flies have provided detailed insights into the genes and neural circuits that regulate sleep. The research shows that the mechanisms of sleep regulation are largely conserved from flies to mammals, and that sleep is not a single state but consists of multiple physiological and behavioral states influenced by the environment and life history.

A subset of DN1p neurons integrates thermosensory inputs to promote wakefulness via CNMa signaling

Xi Jin et al.

Summary: The study found that prolonged increasing of ambient temperature induces reversible sleep reduction and impaired sleep consolidation in fruit flies by activating the internal thermosensory anterior cells. The AC-DN1p-PI neural circuit is responsible for integrating thermosensory inputs into the sleep neural circuit.
