Mitogenomes resolve the phylogeography and divergence times within the endemic New Zealand Callaeidae (Aves: Passerida)

Pascale Lubbe et al.

Summary: The biogeographical origins of the endemic birds of New Zealand, particularly the Callaeidae family, have attracted great interest. The formation of Pliocene marine seaways, such as the Manawatu Strait, is likely to have played a significant role in the divergence of North Island and South Island kokako and saddlebacks/tieke.

Exploring the vertebrate fauna of the Bird's Head Peninsula (Indonesia, West Papua) through DNA barcodes

Evy Arida et al.

Summary: Biodiversity knowledge varies greatly across different biomes on Earth, with some remote areas experiencing large taxonomic knowledge gaps. Tropical biodiversity hotspots are of high concern due to rapid development of anthropogenic activities. The study in the Bird's Head Peninsula suggests that vertebrate diversity in the area is underestimated, highlighting the importance of further exploration and discussion on evolutionary origins and taxonomic knowledge.

Increase of Problematic Mitogenomes of Birds: Causes, Consequences, and Remedies

Summary: This study quantifies problematic mitogenomes of birds and reveals a sharp increase in problematic sequences since 2012, which have been reused 436 times. The problematic mitogenomes have resulted in incorrect phylogenetic hypotheses and unwarranted taxonomic revisions.

Biogeography and diversification of Old World buntings (Aves: Emberizidae): radiation in open habitats

Tianlong Cai et al.

Summary: Through analyzing the phylogeny and diversification patterns of Emberizidae, it was found that their most recent common ancestor originated in the New World and later invaded the eastern Palearctic through the Bering Straits Bridge, splitting into two lineages in Africa and the Palearctic. The group began to diversify in the late Miocene, rapidly at first due to the expansion of open habitats, but the diversification rate decreased in arid habitats as available habitats were occupied. Shifts in habitat preference to open forests led to terminal radiations in the mountains of Central Asia and the eastern Palearctic.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
